Description

The Zefa Herbsternte Raspberry Bush is a highly productive variety, offering large, dark red, highly fragrant fruits. It is a perpetual variety with few thorns. Plant from October to March, for a harvest in June and then from August to October.

To fully enjoy their flavour, raspberries should be consumed quickly after picking, as they do not keep well. If you have a plentiful harvest, consider making coulis, sorbets, tarts, or jams. You can also freeze them. Production reaches its normal level in the third year after planting. One plant can produce fruits for around 10 years. There are two types of raspberries: perpetual varieties, which produce fruits in June and then from August to October, and non-perpetual varieties, which have a plentiful harvest around June - July.

The Raspberry Bush is a deciduous shrub with upright stems, forming a bush about 1.50 m (5ft) in all directions over time. The stems or canes are biennial, each dying after fruiting. Every year, new, prickly suckers emerge from its roots. Raspberry Bush leaves are green on top, white-greenish and downy on the underside. The flowering is very nectar-rich. The white flowers are small (1 to 2 cm (0 to 1in) in diameter), grouped in small clusters of 10 to 12 in April-May. The fruits are formed by small, clustered drupes, easy to detach when ripe.

The Raspberry Bush belongs to the Rosaceae family, like strawberries, blackberries, and wild roses. The wild raspberry is native to Europe and temperate Asia, where it grows in cool climates, often alongside elderberry, beech, or rowan, especially in mountainous undergrowth, but also in plains.

Planting and care

The Raspberry prefers humiferous, rich soils that retain moisture, even in summer, without too much limestone. It likes semi-shaded but bright exposures. In the north it will tolerate the sun well, while in the south, it prefers partial shade. Plant it from October to March, in ordinary soil enriched with compost and well-rotted manure.

Plant the canes every 80 cm (32in) in rows spaced 1.50m (5ft) apart. During planting, the collar should be level with the ground. It is recommended to train them with wire stretched between stakes or on a trellis.

Water regularly to promote root development in the first year of planting. During periods of high heat or prolonged drought, provide additional water. Weed the surface, especially at the beginning of planting and apply mulch to retain moisture in summer.

The Raspberry can be susceptible to various diseases if the growing conditions are not optimal (raspberry anthracnose, raspberry rust, powdery mildew, grey rot during rainy periods, or Botrytis). The damage observed in cultivation is often due to poor weather conditions, especially during cold springs that allow micro-fungi present in the soil to infest the vegetation. To protect the plants, fertilise raspberries with organic fertilisers that promote the growth of anaerobic bacteria in the soil, which enhances the soil's ability to stimulate the plants' immune system. Raspberries can also be attacked by certain pests such as raspberry worms, the larva of a small beetle that lodges in the fruits, without causing significant damage.

Raspberries easily multiply through suckers that grow near the base: remove them and replant them in another part of the garden if desired.

Care

Pruning instructions You must prune Raspberry Bushes to ensure good fruiting. Pruning varies depending on the type, whether they are perpetual or not perpetual. Non-perpetual raspberry bushes bear fruit in early summer on the previous year's branches. After harvesting, cut the fruiting branches to ground level. In winter, keep 10 to 12 shoots per metre, cut the tips, and prune the other branches to ground level. Perpetual raspberry bushes (such as the Zefa Herbsternte variety) bear fruit for the first time in late summer and autumn on young shoots, and then a second time in early summer the following year on the same branches. In August, cut the fruiting branches to ground level, and in winter, prune the tips of the branches that fruited in autumn. Remove dead wood and weak or diseased branches.
Pruning Pruning recommended once a year
