Description

The Sumo 2 Raspberry is a very vigorous perpetual variety, producing very large dark red raspberries. Ideal size and productivity for making jams. Plant from October to March, for a harvest in June and again from August to October.

To fully enjoy their flavour, raspberries should be consumed quickly after picking, as they do not keep well. If you have an abundant harvest, consider making coulis, sorbets, pies or jams. You can also freeze them. Production reaches its height in the third year after planting. A plant can produce fruit for around 10 years. There are two types of raspberries: perpetual varieties, producing from June to October, and non-perpetual varieties, with an abundant harvest in June and July.

The Raspberry is a deciduous shrub with upright stems, forming a bush about 1.50m (4.9ft) in all directions over time. The stems or canes are biennial, each dying after fruiting. Every year, suckers emerge from its roots, new canes armed with small prickles. The Raspberry has leaves which are green on top, white-green and furry on the underside. The flowering is very honey-scented. The white flowers are small (1 to 2cm (0.8in) in diameter), grouped in clusters of 10 to 12, and appear in April-May. The fruits are formed of small berries easy to detach when ripe.

The Raspberry belongs to the Rosaceae family, like strawberries, blackberries and rosehips. The wild raspberry is native to Europe and temperate Asia, where it grows in cool climates alongside elderberries, beech trees or rowans, mostly in mountain undergrowth, but also in plains.

Planting and care

The Raspberry prefers humus-rich soils that retain moisture, even in summer, without too much chalk. It appreciates partially shaded but bright exposures. In the north  it will tolerate the sun well, while in the south, it prefers partial shade. Plant from October to March, in ordinary soil enriched with compost and well-rotted manure.

Place the plants every 80cm (31.5in) on rows spaced 1.50m (4.9ft) apart. For bare-root plants, soak the roots for a day to prevent the formation of air pockets between the roots and the soil. When planting, the collar should be level with the ground. It is recommended to train them with wire between stakes or on a trellis.

Water regularly to promote root growth in the first year of planting. During periods of high heat or prolonged drought, provide additional water. Weed the surface, especially at the beginning of planting and apply mulch to retain moisture in summer.

The Raspberry can be susceptible to various diseases if the growing conditions are not optimal (raspberry anthracnose, raspberry rust, powdery mildew, grey mould in rainy periods, or Botrytis). The damage observed in cultivation is due to poor weather conditions, especially during cold springs that allow micro-fungi present in the soil to infest the vegetation. To protect the plants, it is recommended to feed raspberries with organic fertilizers that promote the multiplication of anaerobic bacteria in the soil, strengthening the soil's ability to stimulate the plant's immune system. Raspberries can also be attacked by certain pests such as raspberry worms, the larvae of a small beetle that lodges in the fruits, without causing significant damage.

Raspberries easily multiply through suckers that grow near the base: dig them up and replant them in another part of the garden if desired.

Care

Pruning instructions The pruning of Raspberry bushes is necessary to allow for good fruiting. It varies depending on the type of variety, whether perpetual or non-perpetual. Non-perpetual raspberry bushes bear fruit in early summer on the previous year's branches. After harvesting, cut the fruited canes down to ground level. In winter, keep 10 to 12 shoots per metre (3.2ft), cut the tips, and prune the remaining canes back to ground level. Perpetual raspberry bushes (such as the Sumo 2 variety) bear fruit for the first time in late summer and autumn on new shoots, then a second time in early summer the following year on the same canes. In August, cut down to ground level the canes that have fruited, then in winter, prune the tips of the canes that bore fruit in autumn. Remove dead wood and weak or diseased branches.
Pruning Pruning recommended once a year
