Description

The Gala Apple is a fairly vigorous variety, with rapid fruiting and high productivity. It is the second most cultivated apple in France. It produces medium-sized fruits, red with yellow-orange background and vertical stripes. Their flesh is firm, very crunchy, fragrant, sweet and slightly acidic. Harvest takes place in early September. The fruits can be stored for about 3 months. The Gala Apple is not self-fertile. It is moderately susceptible to powdery mildew and mites, and sensitive to other diseases.

The apple tree is native to Europe, particularly in France where its presence has been attested since antiquity. The Gala Apple is a variety created in New Zealand by J.H. Kidds in 1939. It is the result of several crossbreedings: Cox Orange x Red Delicious which resulted in Kidd's Orange Red, itself crossed with Golden Delicious to obtain Gala.

The Gala Apple is a semi-erect tree, giving it a very elegant slender appearance. It is absolutely necessary to thin it out to obtain fruits of suitable size and to prevent the occurrence of diseases.
Its foliage is composed of very large, oval, slightly hairy leaves, dark green on top and whitish-green underneath, with deeply serrated edges.
Flowering occurs in April, moderately early. The flowering is not afraid of frost. The apple tree is therefore suitable for cultivation in all regions. Self-sterile, the presence of apple trees whose flowering occurs at the same time is necessary. Varieties such as 'Elstar', 'Reine des reinettes', 'Granny Smith' and 'Golden' are suitable.
Fruiting begins in early September. The fruits are medium-sized, red with yellow-orange background and vertical stripes. Their flesh is firm, very crunchy, fragrant, sweet and slightly acidic.

These apples are particularly suitable for fresh consumption and for pastries. They can of course be used in pastries, compotes, jams, and in savory dishes, in combination with Normandy cheeses for example.

Planting and care

Choose a sunny location for your Gala Apple Tree. The soil can be slightly chalky or acidic but without excess. Dig a wide planting hole at least 3 times the volume of the root ball. Simultaneously add organic matter (potting soil, compost) and a base fertilizer like crushed wood. Do not bury the graft collar. Stake if necessary. Water abundantly, even in winter, even if it rains. Fruit trees are ideally planted between October and March, outside the freezing period. Container-grown plants can be planted all year round, except during periods of high heat or frost.

You can add a small handful of wood ash, rich in potash, during winter. This will improve fruiting. Watch out for possible aphid attacks during the season. A white powdery fungus, powdery mildew, may appear on the leaves in summer, but it does not harm fruit development in gardens. Harvest takes place in September. Only keep the picked fruits. Store apples with the stem down, on shelves or in crates. Choose a preferably completely dark, dry, cool place, but frost-free.

Care

Pruning instructions The pruning of your apple tree can be limited to a simple thinning of dead or obstructive branches at the end of winter, in March. During the first 3 or 4 years, you can also encourage the formation of 4 or 5 main branches, giving the tree a goblet shape, which is traditional in fruit tree cultivation. In any case, make sure to leave some spaces in the tree's structure for good air circulation and light. Don't hesitate to thin out fruit clusters in June. Removing some fruits relieves fragile branches and helps achieve a better size.
