More information

A very productive variety, producing slightly conical fruits with firm and juicy red flesh and a shiny dark red skin. These cherries are resistant to splitting. Flowering begins in early April. To ensure good fruiting, this self-fertile variety needs to be associated with a Summit or Van Bigarreau Cherry tree, in close proximity, within a range of 20 to 30m (66 to 98ft). Planting preferably in autumn for a late harvest, in late June.

Description

The Hedelfingen Sweet Cherry Tree is a highly productive variety, producing slightly conical fruits with firm and juicy red flesh, and shiny dark red skin. These cherries have good resistance to splitting. Flowering begins in early April. In order to ensure good fruit set, this self-fertile variety needs to be planted near a Summit or Van Sweet Cherry Tree, within a radius of 20 to 30m (66 to 98ft). Planting is preferably done in autumn for a late harvest, at the end of June.

The Hedelfingen Cherry Tree produces slightly conical fruits that have good resistance to splitting. The cherries have shiny dark red skin and firm, juicy red flesh. Enjoy them fresh after picking or, if the harvest is abundant, use them to make pies, clafoutis, jams, and preserves. Cherries are rich in vitamin C, minerals, and trace elements.

The Hedelfingen variety, originally from Germany, is highly productive. In early April, the Hedelfingen Sweet Cherry Tree is covered with small white flowers that appear before the leaves. This variety is pollinated by Summit or Van varieties. It is indeed necessary to have another cherry tree nearby, within a radius of 20 to 30m (66 to 98ft), to ensure good fruit set. The Hedelfingen variety is rather late and is harvested from the end of June. The harvest can be more or less abundant depending on the year and may exhibit alternate bearing, allowing the tree to replenish its reserves. The fruit production becomes optimal after 6 to 7 years. Cherries should be picked when ripe as they do not ripen after harvest.

The Sweet Cherry Tree (Prunus avium) belongs to the Rosaceae family. It is a medium-sized tree, reaching a height of 5 to 10m (16 to 33ft) at maturity. It is hardy and can withstand temperatures as low as -20°C, although the flowers are susceptible to spring frosts and may be damaged at -2°C. Its rounded habit provides a beautiful shaded space, which is very pleasant during the summer. Its alternate, dentate leaves are shiny and dark green, turning a lovely russet colour in autumn before falling. This Cherry Tree can be planted on a short grass meadow, at the back of a flower bed, or within an orchard.

Planting and care

Easy to grow, the Cherry Tree thrives in any type of soil, whether acidic or chalky. It prefers moist, light soils and is not well-suited to heavy, clay soils. Choose a sunny location. To minimize the risk of late frost damage to the flowers, it is recommended to plant the Cherry Tree in a sheltered spot, facing west and protected from cold winds in regions prone to spring frosts. Planting is best done in autumn. If planting multiple trees, space them 4 to 5 meters (13 to 16 feet) apart for cup-shaped plants.

Loosen the soil deeply, remove stones and unwanted weeds. Add some sand to improve drainage. Dig a hole 4 to 5 times the size of the root ball. Separate the subsoil from the topsoil. Mix bonemeal or well-rotted compost or potting compost with the subsoil and pour this mixture into the planting hole. Install a stake. Place the root ball, cover with the topsoil and firm it down. Water generously (approximately 10L). Attach the stake to the plant, crossing the tie in the shape of an 8, without touching the trunk.

During cultivation, watering is not necessary except in case of extreme heat. Mulch at the base to retain moisture in summer. Protect your harvest by installing either a bird net, aluminum foil sheets, or old CDs. In case of aphid infestation, spray water mixed with black soap.

Care

Pruning instructions Cherry trees are pruned when they still have leaves, just after the harvest. This pruning should remain superficial and is often not necessary. Cutting large sections should be very occasional as it weakens the trees greatly. Using pruning paste on the wounds will limit the flow of gum that weakens the subject. At the end of autumn, remove dead branches and those that cross inside, in order to allow air and light to circulate in the middle.
Pruning Pruning recommended once a year
Pruning time July to September
Soil moisture Tolerant
Disease resistance Good
Overwinter Can be left in the ground
