Description

With Spathiphyllum Sensation, the peace lily (or spathe flower) takes on grand proportions: this variety is impressive with its XXL, pleated foliage, with prominent veins, and its large white inflorescences that emerge above the clump. Happy in a gentle and slightly humid atmosphere, it truly makes a sensation in contemporary interiors or heated conservatories.

Belonging to the Araceae family, the Spathiphyllum genus naturally lives in the warm, humid undergrowth of tropical forests, often in shaded and cool areas near watercourses.
The Sensation peace lily is a horticultural selection from a breeding programme conducted in Florida: it was stabilised by the breeder James J. Georgusis and marketed under the name Sensation ‘Gorgusis No. 1’. It is sometimes sold under the name Spathiphyllum wallisii ‘Sensation’. This plant forms a large clump of upright leaves that emerge from its crown. They are thick and glossy, elliptical to lanceolate and strongly veined, and can reach 60 to 76 cm in length and 28 to 36 cm in width on a mature specimen. The flowering occurs in waves: a large, ovate white spathe, surrounding a cream spadix, stands on a stem that slightly exceeds the foliage; the spathes can approach 28 to 30 cm in length. Indoors, expect a 0.80 to 1.20 m height (more in a very large container), with a generous spread.
Like many aroids, the plant is toxic if ingested (presence of calcium oxalates), particularly for pets.

Indoors, it thrives in bright light without direct sun or in bright shade, in a rather humid atmosphere, between 18 and 27 °C (in any case above 15 °C). It is suitable for beginners, but overwatering and excessively dry air should be avoided. You can place it in a bright living room away from a bay window, a bright hallway, an office, or a bathroom with a window, avoiding draughts.

This large Spathiphyllum is perfect for filling a slightly empty corner, softening the somewhat severe line of a contemporary piece of furniture, and structuring a room without cluttering it. It pairs well with plants that enjoy the same conditions: an Anthurium crystallinum for its velvety leaves, an Asplenium nidus ‘Crispy Wave’ with its architectural habit, an Aglaonema 'Snowflake' with variegated foliage, or a Philodendron ‘Imperial Green’. Opt for understated containers (matte ceramic, fibre planter) to let their foliage take centre stage.

Location

Position your Spathiphyllum Sensation in bright, indirect light, avoiding direct sun on the leaves: 0-1 m from a north-facing window, 1-2 m from an east-facing window, and preferably 2-4 m from a west/south-facing window (or behind a sheer curtain if closer). Avoid draughts and radiators. Turn the pot regularly to maintain a well-balanced clump. Do not let the plant sit in a saucer of water (risk of root rot) or, conversely, do not let it dry out for long periods: it will wilt, then recover after watering, but repeated episodes will eventually exhaust it.

Maintenance and care

Watering tips

Water when the substrate is dry on the surface. In summer, water 2 to 3 times a week; in winter, reduce to once a week. Mist the foliage 2 to 3 times a week to maintain humidity, especially in heated interiors.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot your Spathiphyllum Sensation in spring, every 2 to 3 years, when the roots start to overcrowd the pot. Between repottings, replace the top few centimetres of compost with fresh potting mix.
Use houseplant compost enriched with peat to retain moisture, while ensuring good drainage with clay pebbles at the bottom of the pot.
Apply a liquid fertiliser specially formulated for flowering plants (NPK 7-3-6) every two weeks from May to September to support flowering.

Houseplant care

Spathiphyllum requires little maintenance. Clean the leaves regularly with a damp sponge to remove dust and maintain their shine.
Pruning is not necessary. Once or twice a year, clean the foliage by removing dry and damaged leaves from the base, as well as faded flower stems.

Disease and pest advice

Common diseases include yellowing of the leaves due to excess water or overly cool air. To combat scale insects, clean the leaves with a cloth soaked in 70% alcohol. Maintain high ambient humidity by placing the pot on a bed of gravel kept in water and by regularly misting the leaves; this will reduce the risk of red spider mites appearing.
