Description

The Peperomia 'Nevada' is a remarkable succulent Peperomia with tubular-shaped leaves in light green to lime green hues, hence its other name 'Happy Bean'. It forms a small, upright, bushy, fairly drought-tolerant plant but susceptible to root rot if overwatered. Ideally, provide it with bright, indirect light, though it can also tolerate medium light levels.

Belonging to the Piperaceae family, the Peperomia genus comprises around 1,700 species typically comprising thick, fleshy foliage. These plants are native to Central and South America as well as Asia, with some found as far as Florida. They naturally grow in tropical undergrowth, in soft light and high humidity, often as epiphytes or among rocks. The Peperomia ferreyrae 'Nevada' is also known as Peperomia ferreyrae 'Happy Bean' or Peperomia ferreyrae 'Pincushion'. This ornamental cultivar originates from the Peperomia ferreyrae (or Bean Peperomia) species native to Peru. It forms a plant with succulent leaves on thick, upright stems. These fleshy leaves are designed to store water, helping the plant withstand occasional droughts. They reach 7 to 8 cm in length, while the plant typically grows no taller than 30–40 cm with a similar spread. The name 'Peperomia' derives from the Greek words 'peperi' (pepper) and 'homoios' (resembling), highlighting its relation to the Piperaceae family which also includes black pepper (Piper nigrum).

Pair the Peperomia 'Nevada's triking tubular, vibrant foliage with plants sharing similar growing conditions such as the Zamioculcas zamiifolia 'Raven' (or ZZ plant) whose upright habit and dark leaves will create a lovely contrast. This Peperomia thrives in standard household ambient humidity without misting, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings.

Maintenance and care

Water once a week when the compost is dry. Empty the saucer. In winter, reduce the watering frequency.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot every 2 to 3 years, in spring
Use a well-draining and aerated mix, with perlite or a cactus potting mix. This helps prevent excess moisture from settling around the roots and reduces the risk of root rot. Add a drainage layer at the bottom of the pot to avoid water stagnation.
Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser (NPK 10-10-10) monthly during the growth period (spring and summer).

Houseplant care

Remove damaged leaves to prevent the onset of diseases.

Disease and pest advice

In case of a mealybug infestation, clean the leaves with a cloth soaked in soapy water and isolate the plant until the parasitic pests disappear. If red spider mites attack, shower the plant several times.
