Description

Rhipsalis horrida (syn. Rhipsalis baccifera subsp. horrida), also known as mistletoe cactus or reed cactus, is a houseplant cactus very different from desert species. A highly trailing epiphytic plant, it develops flexible stems that cascade from a pot placed up high, creating a fine. architectural waterfall effect. It will thrive in a bright living room, a temperate conservatory, or a light bathroom where the air remains a bit more humid. In a hanging basket, this variety will also complement an orchid collection or a plant-filled shelf.

Belonging to the Cactaceae family, this taxon is also named Rhipsalis horrida and Hariota horrida. It is native to Madagascar, where it lives as an epiphyte on branches, but also on rocks, up to 1500 m altitude.
The plant forms a densely branched clump, then sends out cylindrical stems measuring 3 to 6 mm in diameter, marked with fine ribs; the areoles on young stems bear stiff, reddish-brown bristles, which are the origin of its name. Its growth is rather rapid in the warm season; over time, the stems can exceed 1 m and reach up to 2 m indoors. The discreet flowering consists of small creamy-white, sometimes yellowish, flowers, followed by round whitish berries. This plant is considered non-toxic for cats and dogs.

Indoors, it prefers bright light without scorching sun, a rather humid atmosphere, and temperatures between 15 and 28 °C, avoiding dropping below 10-13 °C. It is a fairly easy plant for beginners, provided it is handled gently (its stems break easily) and watering is moderate; it particularly enjoys a spot near a filtered window or in a bright bathroom.

To make the most of its trailing habit, place this mistletoe cactus in a tall planter on a console, or in a hanging basket above a reading nook. It is perfect for softening the lines of a narrow piece of furniture without cluttering the floor. In a houseplant collection, pair it with a Hoya sigitallis with variegated leaves, a Dischidia ruscifolia with small heart-shaped foliage, and a Peperomia prostrata with flexible stems dotted with patterns. Add, in the background, a rabbit's foot fern Humata tyermanii to vary the textures between fronds and stems.

Location

Place Rhipsalis horrida near a bright window, but without direct sunlight during the hottest hours; a sheer curtain or positioning it 50 cm to 1 m away from the glass suits it well. When hanging, allow space for the stems to cascade without being brushed against, as they break easily. Avoid cold draughts, contact with icy glass in winter, and proximity to a radiator: overly dry air will brown the tips.

Maintenance and care

Watering tips

Water when the surface of the mix has dried out, allowing it to drain thoroughly; in winter, simply keep the substrate very slightly moist. Mist regularly with soft water if the air is dry (during heating periods or heatwaves).

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot preferably at the beginning of spring, every 3 to 4 years or so, into a pot one size larger. This plant performs better when slightly pot-bound than in a large volume of damp compost.
Use a very airy mix that drains quickly: a good cactus compost or free-draining compost, lightened with perlite, and enriched with a little bark such as "orchid compost". The pot must have drainage holes, and do not allow water to collect in the bottom of the outer pot.
Apply a low-nitrogen liquid fertiliser, specifically for cacti/succulents, NPK 2-7-7 (or similar), from April to September, at half strength, once a month. Stop feeding in autumn-winter; if the plant is preparing buds, a "tomato-type" fertiliser can be used more regularly during the flowering phase.

Houseplant care

The stems may release a clear sap when cut or broken, sometimes slightly sticky: handle the plant gently and wipe if necessary. Dust occasionally with a soft brush, without pulling on the branches.
Pruning is not essential. Simply cut back any overly long or damaged stems with a clean, sharp tool to maintain a balanced shape. The cut segments can be used for cuttings.

Disease and pest advice

In case of mealybug infestation, gently clean the affected areas with a cotton bud soaked in 70% alcohol. Shower the plant to combat red spider mites.
