Description

Vriesea 'Ida' is an ideal indoor plant for adding elegance and colour to your home. With its glossy foliage forming a generous rosette and its intense pink inflorescence, this compact variety will enhance any sufficiently bright room. Its style suits modern, bohemian, or even minimalist interiors. Whether in the living room, bedroom, or office, it enhances your decor while requiring minimal maintenance.

Vriesea 'Ida' belongs to the Bromeliaceae family, like Guzmania and Billbergia nutans, for example. The genus name Vriesea pays tribute to the Dutch botanist Willem Hendrik de Vriese. Vriesea 'Ida' stands out for its moderate growth, typically reaching a height of 30 to 40 cm at maturity. This variety develops a rosette of smooth, broad, and arching green leaves, forming a dense and regular structure. From the centre of this rosette, a flat spike-shaped inflorescence, composed of bright pink bracts and small, discreet flowers will emerge after a few months. A notable characteristic of Vriesea is that the mother rosette dies after flowering, but it produces offsets at its base that ensure the continuity of the plant. Indoors, Vriesea 'Ida' prefers indirect light, avoiding direct sunlight through a window which could damage its leaves. Temperatures between 18 and 24°C are perfect for this tropical plant.
The Vriesea genus includes around 280 species of tropical herbaceous perennial plants. These plants are native to the tropical forests of Central and South America, where they often grow as epiphytes on trees to capture maximum light.

For a tropical ambiance, pair Vriesea 'Ida' with a Guzmania 'Luna', with its yellow floral bracts, and a Tillandsia cyanea, known for its fine foliage and magenta pink flowering. These three plants, from the same Bromeliaceae family, share similar growing conditions and will thrive side by side with ease.

Location

The Vriesea 'Ida' is suitable for any room with good light, without direct sunlight and moderate humidity. Avoid draughts and direct heat sources such as radiators. Do not allow water to stagnate in the rosette when the temperature drops below 18°C. It will brighten up a well-lit living room, a bright bedroom, or even an office. Placed on a shelf, console, or coffee table, it naturally draws the eye with its bright pink floral bracts. This plant pairs beautifully with ceramic pots or natural materials, such as rattan or wood, to enhance its tropical appeal.

Maintenance and care

Water by pouring fresh water into the central rosette and keep the substrate slightly moist. Be careful not to overwater as this can cause the roots to rot. Avoid leaving standing water when the temperature drops below 18°C.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repotting the Vriesea 'Ida' is best done in spring, after flowering, particularly when separating the offsets. Since this plant has few roots, a small-diameter pot (10-12 cm) is usually sufficient.
Use a light, well-draining compost, ideally a mix for bromeliads or orchids. Add clay pebbles to the bottom of the pot to improve drainage.
Apply a liquid fertiliser for green plants with an NPK formula of 20-20-20. Dilute it to half the recommended dose and apply it once a month during the growth period, in spring and summer. Stop applications in autumn and winter.

Houseplant care

The plant requires little maintenance. Occasionally clean the leaves to remove dust. Ensure to keep the rosette clean by avoiding the accumulation of debris or dust, especially at the heart of the plant.
Vriesea 'Ida' does not require specific pruning. After flowering, when the main rosette dies, simply remove the faded leaves and allow the offsets to develop.

Disease and pest advice

In case of mealybug infestation, clean the leaves with a cloth soaked in 70% alcohol. Excess water leads to root rot.
