Description

Hemerocallis 'South Seas', or Daylily, is an exceptional variety that combines numerous qualities. It offers flowers with a unique colour, which are radiant in the light of summer. Its petals are coral-orange with a red central median and halo, formed of a thick and undulating substance, and their almost tropical appearance is further accentuated by a small yellow throat. This variety tirelessly blooms on ramified stems, each with 30 to 35 buds. It is also a robust perennial adorned with elegant and very healthy foliage, whose success is guaranteed. A sumptuous novelty for summer flower beds!

The Hemerocallis genus belongs to the Liliaceae family. These are  perennial and hardy plants, with deciduous foliage, and are sometimes semi-evergreen. 'South Seas' is a recent variety, distinguished by its unique colour, of an intensity never before achieved in the world of daylilies. This prolific perennial grows in a fairly dense clump that will reach 75 cm (30 in) in height, with a relative spread of 80 cm (32 in). Daylilies tend to spread a little when they like the soil. The flowers measure about 13 cm (5 in) in diameter, and the petals in this variety are thick, velvety, wide, and slightly wavy. Each flower lasts only one day, but flowering is constantly renewed over a beautiful period between June and July, and even August if the soil remains moist. The stems are robust and well branched, and therefore particularly floriferous. The foliage is abundant, linear, and deciduous. Daylilies are plants with short rhizomes and fleshy roots that tolerate dry soils, but are more opulent and floriferous in moist soil.

Very easy to grow, these plants thrive equally well in shade and in the sun. Some of them can be a little invasive, so do not hesitate to divide the clumps every four or five years, preferably in autumn after flowering. Daylilies are often called "the perfect perennial plant" because of their vibrant colours and their ability to tolerate any type of environment, but also due to their lack of modesty: they display a beautiful exuberance that complements other perennials well. Plant them generously in the background of your flower beds. All summer bulb flowers can be planted together with daylilies. 'South Seas' will blend perfectly into the setting of a romantic or classic garden, with cornflowers, campanulas, penstemons, perennial flax, lemon-yellow daylilies, or mauve phlox by its side. On a balcony or terrace, large pots of at least 30 cm (12 in) deep should be used, and dwarf varieties should be chosen. The flowers are edible: they brighten up salads and garnish desserts.

Planting and care

Plant your Hemerocallis 'South Seas' in a good garden soil that is not too clayey and that is enriched with humus and compost. In these conditions, your perennial will have good tolerance to summer droughts and will not suffer from winter frosts. Very easy to grow, this variety is not susceptible to parasites or diseases, and so there is no need to treat it and rodents are not interested in it. Daylilies thrive equally well in partial shade and in full sun, so 4 to 5 hours of daily sunlight will be sufficient. Plant by burying the collar 3 to 4 cm (1 to 2 in) below the surface. Do not plant them too closely to each other if you are planting several, as the gaps will quickly fill up. For a few weeks after planting, it is a good idea to keep the soil sufficiently moist. Divide the clump preferably in autumn, after flowering.
