Description

The Itoh Garden Treasure Peony is a true yellow peony; its semi-double flowers have canary yellow petals at the beginning of flowering, then butter yellow ones that diffuse a sweet fruity fragrance.

This opulent herbaceous peony has deciduous, alternate leaves composed of green leaflets. In May, the large solitary semi-double flowers with a diameter of 12cm (5in) are carried at the end of long semi-rigid stems 60cm (24in) high.

The 'Golden Treasure' peony dislikes heavy waterlogged soils, especially in winter. Improve your garden soil with sand and compost. Apply compost every year in March. Avoid permanent mulching which can encourage diseases. A site with dappled sunlight is ideal for beautiful flowering.

Plant the 'Golden Treasure' peony in groups of 3 plants in a shrub or perennial bed. It pairs beautifully with irises or roses. Cut flowers in a bouquet are stunning.

TIP: Herbaceous peonies should not be buried more than 3cm (1in) deep, otherwise they will take several years to flower again.

Planting and care

The Itoh Golden Treasure Peony should be planted from mid-September to April, leaving a spacing of 80cm (32in), in fertile, deep, humus-bearing, moist, and well-drained soil. Choose a sunny but not excessively hot location, with partial shade in hotter southern regions. Avoid permanent mulching, as it can introduce diseases, and apply rose fertiliser or compost in March. Pruning is unnecessary, but remove faded flowers and stained parts to prevent fungal diseases. Divide old clumps in autumn only if the plant becomes overcrowded. Be careful, as it has delicate roots and dislikes being moved; following this operation it may not flower for several years. Cut the foliage down to ground level between February and April or October and November. Provide a support stake for the flower stems.
