Beautiful tubers compared to other garden centres. Now, we just have to wait for spring . . . provided that the voles don't help themselves during the winter.

Description

Collection of 4 Chinese Peonies that are hardy, floriferous and fragrant. These are ancient varieties that have proven themselves. These perennials are reliable, with large flowers that can be used to make soft bouquets in May, with lilacs and irises, for example. Easy to grow, peonies thrive in moist soil and prefer sunny conditions. Hardy and reliable, they sometimes take a little time to establish themselves, but they develop year after year and can live for more than 50 years.

The collection consists of:

1 x Sarah Bernhardt: large flowers with a diameter of 16 to 20 cm (6 to 8 in), double and dense, with silver-pink petals on the periphery, a brighter pink and slightly salmon in the centre. Generous green foliage in a 95 cm (37 in) tuft.

1 x Karl Rosenfield: double flowers with a diameter of 13-14 cm (5-6 in), slightly disheveled, with fringed petals of a pure raspberry-red sometimes edged with white around a centre of golden stamens which are often visible. Leaves are a rich green carried on purple petioles, in a well-formed 85 cm (34 in) tuft. Slightly fragrant.

1 x Bowl of Beauty: Japanese-style flowers, 15-16 cm (6 in) wide, composed of a light pink corolla surrounding a large heart of delicate cream-coloued petals. Vigorous vegetation, in an 80 cm (32 in) tuft. The foliage is light green.

1 x Red Charm: large double flowers in the shape of a crown, 18 cm (7 in) in diameter and intense carmine-red in colour. The corolla of large petals surrounds a centre in the shape of a large pompon composed of pointed and cut petals. Well-furnished foliage on an upright tuft measuring 80-90 cm (32-35 in) in height.

Labelled and packaged separately in pouches.

Chinese herbaceous peonies are mainly derived from Paeonia lactiflora, a perennial herbaceous plant native to Central and Eastern Asia (from eastern Tibet and northern China to eastern Siberia), where it naturally grows in woods and meadows. This plant belongs to the buttercup or peony family.

Peonies are among those plants that form the basis of a garden. In the past, every garden, from the humblest to the most elaborate, proudly displayed clumps of flowers that made their way into the house, keeping company in every bouquet with purple lilacs and blue bellflowers. Opulent and generous, the Chinese peony can be planted in flower beds or along pathways, combined with timeless and unpretentious perennials such as columbines, bellflowers, hollyhocks, carnations or Christmas roses. It will also increase the supply of flowers for bouquets in the vegetable garden. Growing in pots is not recommended, as its needs will not be met. Over time, peonies become quite majestic and bloom more abundantly, producing up to 60 flowers.

Planting and care

The best time to plant peonies is in autumn. Plant your peonies in the sun or in a bright location, spaced 60 cm (24 in) apart. They appreciate cold winters that promote dormancy and flower formation. The soil should be loose, deep, fertile and moist. They need space and are sensitive to competition from other species. Prepare a hole 50 cm (20 in) deep and mix organic fertiliser into your soil, partially fill the hole, place your plants and cover with 6 cm (2 in) of soil above the eyes. After planting, firm the soil and water generously.

Our secret for creating bouquets: cut your peonies at dawn when the buds start to colour, and put them straight in water.
