Description

The English rose Boscobel offers double, beautifully formed rosette flowers in a very intense shade of salmon pink. The roses, which irresistibly catch attention, emit a powerful floral and fruity fragrance, on a medium-sized, vigorous and very healthy bush.

The Boscobel rose has an upright habit, taller than wide, reaching 1 m (3ft) in height and 75 cm (30in) in width. Its growth is vigorous and its beautiful dark green foliage is highly disease-resistant. It has a good repeat flowering. Its red buds open into pretty cups, then gradually bloom into perfect, round and tightly packed rosettes, with excellent holding ability. The numerous small petals display various shades, pale or vivid pink, coral, salmon, harmoniously blending, creating an intense and luminous impression that is very appealing. The corolla slightly opens to reveal a yellow heart. Its delightful fragrance has a medium intensity, reminiscent of hawthorn with hints of elderflower, pear and almond. This variety also tolerates rain well.

This bush, slightly smaller than others in the same range, is perfect for small gardens, and looks stunning in a border with your choice of perennials or annuals. To create a beautiful display, it can be paired, for example, with the 'Autumn Delight' rose, a goat's beard (Aruncus dioicus), Verbascum Gainsborough (or other hybrid mulleins), 'The Pearl' and 'Terracotta' yarrows.

Built in 1632 in Shropshire, Boscobel House is owned by English Heritage. It is the famous place where King Charles II hid in an oak tree while being pursued by Cromwell's soldiers during the English Civil War.

Created by David Austin in 2012. An English rose hybrid named Leander.

Planting and care

Plant your English Boscobel Rose in a sunny or lightly shaded location. English roses are tolerant, but they won't like excessive limestone. They will adapt to any garden as long as the soil is well worked and rich enough. To plant your rose, work the soil by crumbling it and place an amendment at the bottom of the planting hole, such as bonemeal.  Water generously after planting to eliminate air pockets. Water regularly for a few weeks to facilitate root growth. Pruning English roses is essential for flowering. At the end of winter, shorten the branches to 3-5 eyes above the ground (at the lowest), choosing a bud that points outward for a more elegant habit. Take advantage of this pruning to remove dead wood and unsightly branches. Pruning should be done at an angle above a bud. As the flowers bloom, remove faded flowers, as this stimulates the development of other buds.

Roses are often spotted or unsightly in late summer, but this is not a problem for their development. These spots are not harmful to the rose, it is a natural phenomenon.
