Description

Buddleja Rêve de Papillon® Lavender is a butterfly bush distinguished by its opulent lavender-coloured flower spikes, which are delicately scented. This small bush with a compact, well-branched habit fits easily in the garden as well as in a pot on a terrace or balcony. Undemanding and highly ornamental, it attracts butterflies all summer long in borders, low hedges, and flowering edges.

Buddleia Rêve de Papillon® Lavender is also known by the cultivar name ‘Bosjerry’. It was developed by the American breeder Scott Trees and is part of the Rêve de Papillon® range, a series of buddleias with abundant summer flowering, a compact habit, well-branched and well-suited to contemporary gardens. This cultivar is considered sterile: it produces less than 2% viable seeds. This helps limit its potential for dispersal and invasion, while concentrating the plant's energy on flower production.

With medium-fast growth, ‘Bosjerry’ reaches approximately 1.50m in height and spread by the age of 10 years. Its habit is bushy, compact, rounded, and very branched from the base. Its flowers, gathered in long conical inflorescences called thyrses, measure between 15 and 40 cm in length and 5 to 7 cm in width. They display a mauve to light violet-blue hue, are lightly scented, rich in nectar, and very attractive to butterflies. Flowering lasts from July to September.
The foliage is deciduous, formed of opposite, lanceolate, 7 to 15 cm long leaves, dark green on top and silvery-grey underneath. Severe pruning in late winter encourages abundant flowering which will form on the current year's wood. This very hardy bush is resistant to urban pollution and does not suffer from occasional drought in deep soil.

Whether planted in the centre of a perennial border, in a small group, or in a low hedge, Buddleja davidii Rêve de Papillon® Lavender decorates the garden all summer with its long spikes animated by butterflies. It is also perfect at the corner of a terrace or in the company of other summer-flowering bushes like Caryopteris clandonensis 'Sterling Silver' or the pink spiraea 'Anthony Waterer'. In an informal hedge, it pairs beautifully with English roses like Gentle Hermione or Emily Brontë. Thanks to its compact habit, it also adapts very well to container cultivation on a well-exposed terrace. Its scented flowers can be picked to compose charming rustic cut flower arrangements.

Planting and care

Buddleia davidii 'Rêve de Papillon® ‘Lavender’ is easy to to grow, as it is an undemanding plant that adapts to a wide range of soils and climates. It enjoys sunny spots but will also flower in partial shade. Plant it in spring or early autumn in ordinary soil, even if it is chalky and poor, as long as it is well-worked and well-drained. Once well-established, the plant will tolerate periods of moderate drought, especially if planted in deep soil. Buddleia has no significant pests. However, be mindful of caterpillars, vine weevils, bugs, and red spider mites that may infest it. Vigorous pruning after flowering and/or in early spring maintains a branched, compact habit and encourages the bush to produce numerous flowers.

Care

Pruning instructions The bush only requires a single pruning after flowering or in spring. However, every 2 to 3 years, it is beneficial to cut back the branches to maintain a compact habit and prevent the bush from "opening up". At the end of winter, around March or April, remove half, or even two-thirds of the branches, and cut away all dead wood. Buddleias flower on the current year's wood, so you won't risk removing the upcoming flowers.
Pruning Pruning recommended once a year
