More information

Here is a Rhododendron generous in colours, with cream-white flowers bordered by a wide purple-pink margin, patterned in the centre with saturated yellow speckled with green-yellow. The flowering occurs from mid-April to early May. The bush, well-branched, has elliptical and dark green evergreen foliage. This variety is perfectly hardy. Cultivate it in ericaceous soil that you will always keep slightly moist, in partial shade, in the morning sun.

Description

The Rhododendron 'Raphaela' is a hybrid variety of moderate size with variegated flowering. It forms a bush with an upright habit and elliptical evergreen foliage, covered in spring, in April-May, with funnel-shaped flowers, widely open, of cream-white colour, surrounded by a wide border of bright purple. A saturated yellow eye, speckled with yellow-green, completes the colourful picture. This hardy variety thrives in acidic, rich, moist, but well-drained soil under our humid climate.

Rhododendrons are plants from the ericaceae family, just like heathers. The 'Raphaela' cultivar was obtained by Hans Hachmann in 2009. It forms a branched and dense bush with an upright habit, reaching approximately 90 cm (35in) to 1.10 m (4ft) in height at the age of 10 years and 1 m (3ft) to 1.20 m (4ft) in width, under good growing conditions, in open ground. Its growth is relatively slow. Its large leaves are elliptical, dark green and glossy. They persist in winter. Around mid-April, up to 15 individual flowers bloom at the end of the branches in a dense and rounded inflorescence for approximately three weeks. Funnel-shaped, 7 to 9 cm (3 to 4in) in diameter, they are slightly undulate at the edge. They are widely open and adorned with a wide border of sparkling bright purple. In the centre, they are cream-white in star shape, with a saturated yellow eye, speckled with yellow-green.

The Rhododendron hybrid Raphaela is a hardy plant, up to -23°C (1°F). It appreciates a semi-shaded exposure to the east in the morning sun. It prefers rainwater for watering. Plant it in isolation, in front of a house, for example, or in the company of other rhododendrons or azaleas, in compositions of varied colours, in front of sizeable deciduous leaf trees. Combine it with spireas or plants from ericaceous soils, such as skimmias, Pieris, ferns, hostas, and Kalmias, in a flower bed.

Planting and care

Plant the 'Raphaela' hybrid Rhododendron in a partially shaded or shady location, protected from cold and drying winds, in a cool, humus-bearing and light soil, with a tendency towards acid or neutral. Like all plants of heathland, it does not tolerate limestone soils or heavy soils saturated with water in winter. This rhododendron will also tolerate morning sun exposure if the soil remains moist in summer. Avoid planting at its base, as its shallow roots do not tolerate competition from other plants, especially for water resources.

Dig a hole with a volume three times larger than the pot. Soak the root ball in non-limestone water and plant the bush in a mixture of 1/4 compost, leaf compost, gravel or pumice, and loam. Water generously and keep the soil moist in summer. Azaleas and Rhododendrons have a shallow root system. Therefore, they are susceptible to long periods of drought. That's why it is recommended to enrich the soil with humus and water abundantly during dry periods. In addition, this root system is not very strong, which is why it is essential to lighten heavy soils with draining materials (gravel, pumice, clay pellets) at planting. Apply a mulch of crushed pine bark at the base of the bush every spring to maintain soil moisture while preserving an acidic pH.

Maintenance consists of removing faded flowers in summer and pruning off dead branches. Azaleas and Rhododendrons can sometimes be attacked by weevils that eat the edges of leaves and rootlets and by the famous "rhododendron beetle", which does not often cause severe damage. Effective biological solutions are available today against weevils. Yellowing of the leaves (chlorosis) in rhododendrons indicates poor assimilation of iron in the soil and causes the premature death of the plant. While limestone is frequently the cause, poorly drained soil or a deeply planted root ball can also be a factor.

"Rhodos" reach their full potential in our Breton and Norman climates, planted in limestone-free soil and a humid environment. Their cultivation in our warmer and drier climates is generally doomed to failure in the long run, despite all attempts to acclimatise them.
