Description
The Chico Amaryllis belongs to the cybister amaryllis category. Its spectacular flowering from December to March gives it an exotic appearance.
Its extravagant, star-shaped flowers are reminiscent of a tropical bird. They feature long, very narrow petals of 10cm. The flowers are red with green shading towards the tips; the lower petal is entirely green. At the heart of the flower are long stamens that sometimes extend beyond the petals. 4 to 6 flowers are borne on sturdy stems.
Amaryllis Chico, also known as hippeastrum, develops its foliage after flowering. This indoor bulb can reach 50cm in height in a pot. You can also place it against a well-sheltered wall in your garden, protected from cold winds, bearing in mind that the amaryllis does not tolerate frost. The flowers make beautiful cut flower arrangements. The Chico amaryllis is native to the Andes of Bolivia and the far north of Argentina.

Planting and care
Amaryllis Chico thrives in full sun or partial shade in any moist soil. Indoors, place it in bright light. For pot cultivation, allow 2cm around the bulb and use a heavy pot to prevent it from toppling over under the weight of the amaryllis, which tends to lean towards the light. Use a light, well-drained potting compost, neutral or slightly acidic. In a pot, leave half of the bulb above the soil so that the neck does not remain wet from watering and rot. This also gives more room for the soil. Plant your amaryllis from October to January depending on the desired flowering period, bearing in mind that it takes 6 weeks from planting to flowering. After flowering, cut off the flowers, allowing the foliage to grow. At the end of summer, allow the soil to dry out and cut off the dry leaves. 6 weeks later, repot the bulb in fresh potting compost.

It will vary according to where you live:- In zones 9 to 10 (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), flowering will occur about 2 to 4 weeks earlier.
- In zones 6 to 7 (Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and lower mountainous regions), flowering will be delayed by 2 to 3 weeks.
- In zone 5 (Central Europe, Scandinavia), blooming will be delayed by 3 to 5 weeks.
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
