Description

The Darwin Tulip Mix brings together several floriferous and easy-to-grow varieties, offering a range of diverse colours. Their large flowers are carried by long, sturdy stems that are resistant to harsh weather conditions. They bloom in the heart of spring. Majestic in flower beds, they also make great flowers for bouquets, paired with lilacs, peonies, or flowering apple branches.

The Darwin hybrid tulip belongs to the lily family. Of horticultural origin, it is currently classified in Division 4, known for its large single flowers with an oval shape, appearing in the middle of the season, carried by long stems that are resistant to harsh weather conditions. Tulips in this group are the most cultivated for the cut flower trade. Darwin tulips reach a height of 45 to 55 cm (18 to 22in) when in bloom. Flowering takes place in April-May, with each flower lasting several days before wilting. The basal foliage is composed of broadly lanceolate, glaucous green leaves. They turn yellow and dry out a few weeks after flowering, when the bulb enters dormancy. The Darwin tulip easily naturalises in the garden, it is easy to cultivate and reliably blooms every spring.

The corollas of Darwin tulips are perfect in the garden or in bouquets, regardless of the style of the arrangement. They can be planted in groups, mixed with forget-me-nots for example. They also pair well with white daffodils, jonquils, hyacinths, as well as with Corsican hellebores and euphorbias, creating stunning scenes. They can also be planted in borders, rockeries, flower beds, as well as in pots and containers. They complement tall perennials perfectly. When putting them in a vase, use very little water, just a bit at the bottom is enough! Furthermore, if your tulips open too quickly, you can add two to three ice cubes to the vase every day.

Note: each batch is unique and the proportion of colours may vary from one to another.

Planting and care

Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to December, at a depth of 15 cm (6in), spacing them 10 cm (4in) apart. The planting should be done in ordinary soil, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, loose, well-worked, and well-drained. Never add poorly decomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. Tulips will grow well in moist to dry soil in summer. Plant them in a sunny or partially shaded location. Once the flowering is finished, it is advisable to remove the fruits to avoid exhausting the plant. Do not cut the foliage until it is completely yellow and dry.
