Description

Tulipa 'Joint Division' does not go unnoticed. It proudly displays its double and intensely fringed corolla in flower beds and bouquets, like a frosted creation, where golden apricot and orange blend with a hint of bright pink on the edges. This flamboyant fringed tulip will be enhanced by decorative foliage, small white and blue forget-me-not flowers, and a carpet of violets. This variety blooms in spring, in the heart of the tulip season.

Tulipa 'Joint Division' belongs to the Liliaceae family. Of horticultural origin, it is classified in the 'Crispa' group, whose main characteristic is finely cut fringed petals. This tulip will reach 45 to 50cm (18 to 20in) in height when in bloom. Flowering takes place in April-May, a little later than other tulips. The flowers are double, cup-shaped, and beautifully coloured in yellow, orange, and pink with red highlights. The flowers last a long time and extend the tulip season until May. The glaucous-coloured foliage turns yellow and dies a few weeks after flowering, while the bulb enters a dormant phase.

In the world of flowers, there is truly nothing comparable to fringed tulips to spice up your spring garden with something unique. Ideal for borders, Tulipa 'Joint Division' will also create beautiful spots in perennial flower beds, alongside biennial plants that will fill the space after flowering. You can choose wallflowers or columbines for this purpose. Lady's mantle is also a beautiful companion for tulips with warm colours. Fringed tulips will bring a unique and refined touch to your bouquets. Only use a little water in a vase. If your tulips open too quickly, you can add two to three ice cubes to the vase each day.

Planting and care

Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to December. Choose a sunny or partially shaded location. Plant in ordinary, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, loose, well-worked, and well-draining soil. Never add poorly decomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. Plant the bulbs at a depth of 15cm (6in), spacing them 10cm (4in) apart. The bulbs will grow well in moist to dry soil in summer. Once flowering is finished, it is wise to remove the fruits to avoid exhausting the plant.

After flowering, their foliage becomes unsightly, so we recommend planting heuchera, tiarella, brunnera, bleeding heart, or Euphorbia cyparissia at the forefront of your flower beds. Their foliage will enhance the colours of your tulips, and will elegantly conceal the tulip's yellowed leaves.

Red and orange colours are less common in the garden so take advantage of the wide range of tulips in these shades. For an elegant effect, these tulips will be enhanced by dark green foliage, such as a hedge of yews or boxwoods. Also consider dark foliage plants like Heuchera 'Obsidian'.
