Description

The 'Louvre Orange' Fringed Tulip, a more colourful version of the 'Louvre' variety, also known as the Dentate Tulip, offers a very bright, single flowering in May. Its beautiful delicately fringed flower is captivating with its gradient of pinkish-orange colour, becoming brighter orange towards the edge of the petals. Whether planted in a bed, along a border, or in a bouquet, it will announce the arrival of spring in a beautiful way.

The 'Louvre Orange' Dentate Tulip belongs to the Liliaceae family. Originally horticultural in origin, it is now classified in the 'Crispa' group, whose main characteristic is the finely toothed ends of the petals. This tulip will reach a height of 35-40cm (14-16in) when in bloom. The flowering period occurs in April-May, a little later than other tulips. The flowers are single, with a slightly closed cup shape, in shades of pink, purple, and orange. The fringed edges of this magnificent tulip are almost yellow. The flowers last a long time and extend the tulip season until May.

In the world of flowers, few plants can rival tulips in adding spice to the garden in spring, and the fringed varieties have something unique. Ideal for beds or borders, the 'Louvre Orange' Tulip will also create beautiful spots among perennials, alongside biennial plants that will fill the space after flowering. You can choose foxgloves, mulleins, forget-me-nots, or wallflowers for this purpose. Fringed tulips also make beautiful bouquets, accompanied, for example, by fern leaves or grasses.

About botanical species: Tulip species are distributed naturally from Western Europe to China and Japan, passing through Eastern Europe, Asia Minor, and Central Asia. They are also found in North Africa and the Indian subcontinent. The centre of diversity for the genus is located in the Pamir and Hindu Kush mountains and the steppes of Kazakhstan.

Planting and care

Plant the 'Louvre Orange' Tulip bulbs in autumn, from September to December, at a depth of 15cm (6in), spacing them 10cm (4in) apart. The planting should be done in ordinary soil, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, loose, well-worked, and well-draining. Never add undecomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. The 'Louvre Orange' tulip will thrive in moist to dry soil. Plant it in a sunny or partially shaded location. After flowering, it is preferable to remove the fruits to avoid exhausting the plant. Allow the leaves to dry completely before cutting them. We recommend planting Heucheras, Tiarellas, Brunneras, Bleeding Hearts, Cypress Spurge, at the forefront of your flower beds, as their foliage will enhance the colours of your tulips and, during the season, they will elegantly conceal their yellowed leaves. Red is not very common in the garden, so let's take advantage of the wide range of tulips in this colour. For an elegant effect, red tulips will be enhanced by dark green foliage, such as a hedge of Yews or Boxwoods. Also consider dark foliage plants like the 'Obsidian' Heuchera.
