Description

China Pink lily-flowered tulip is a very charming variety. This majestic tulip has soft pink pointed petals that will beautifully complement shades of pink and white. The flowers stand atop 45 cm (18in) tall stems above the wide lanceolate green deciduous leaves. It blooms from late April.

China Pink lily-flowered tulip belongs to the Liliaceae family. Of horticultural origin, it is currently classified in Division 6 of horticultural tulips, characterized by single flowers that bloom in the second half of spring. These have with narrow cup-shaped tepals with pointed and recurved tips at opening and during the night which are star-shaped at the end of flowering. During the day, these flowers become spider-like and widely open. The foliage is thinner than that of other tulips. Each solitary flower is supported by a slender, weather-resistant stem. They were created in the early 20th century.

Tulips are unmatched for bringing spring colour to pots or sunny gardens but remember to consider the height and flowering period when designing your flower beds, as these parameters vary significantly from one cultivar to another. It is a good idea to plant a few more bulbs for beautiful long-lasting cut flowers.

Tulip species are found in most of the Old World, from Western Europe to China and Japan, passing through Eastern Europe, Asia Minor, and Central Asia. Their distribution range also includes North Africa and the Indian subcontinent. The centre of diversity for the genus is in the Pamir and Hindu Kush mountains and the steppes of Kazakhstan.

There are various wild species, many of which are endangered. These are either large tulips from cultivated fields, the most well-known being the Agen tulip (Tulipa agenensis), or small tulips found in wooded areas or among rocks in the mountains. In cultivation, these are called "botanical tulips," and one of the most common is the wild tulip (Tulipa sylvestris), which often used to grow under the protection of vines and whose subspecies australis is known as the southern tulip.

Planting and care

Plant the bulbs in the autumn, from September to December, at a depth of 15 cm (6in), 10 cm (4in) apart in ordinary, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly chalky, loose, well-worked, and well-draining soil. Never add poorly decomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as it could cause the bulbs to rot. Lily-flowered tulips will thrive in moist to dry soil, in a sunny or partially shaded location. After flowering, their foliage becomes unsightly and wilted. We recommend planting Heuchera, Tiarella, Brunnera, Bleeding Heart or Cypress Spurge, at the forefront of your flowerbeds. Their foliage will enhance the colours of your tulips, and elegantly hide their yellowing leaves.
