Description

The Tulip viridiflora 'Greenland' blooms in late spring. Its long and slender flowers open in star shapes in April-May. The petals are pink with green veins.

The Tulip viridiflora is known for its good lasting quality, with flowers that can last up to three weeks. The flowers are perched on 45 cm (18in) tall, weather-resistant rigid stems. The green foliage is deciduous. You can cut them to make beautiful bouquets.

The Tulip viridiflora 'Greenland' can be paired with both biennials and perennials. You can pair them with daisies or pink pansies. They are a charming addition to your flowerbeds.

Tulip species are found from Western Europe to China and Japan, passing through Eastern Europe, Asia Minor, and Central Asia. Their distribution area also includes North Africa and the Indian subcontinent. The centre of diversity for this genus is in the Pamir and Hindu Kush mountains and the steppes of Kazakhstan.

There are various wild species of tulips in France, many of which are endangered. These include large adventive tulips from cultivated fields, the most well-known being the Tulipa agenensis, and small tulips found in wooded areas or among rocks in the mountains. In cultivation, they are called "botanical tulips," and one of the most common is the wild tulip (Tulipa sylvestris), which used to often grow sheltered by vines and whose subspecies australis is known as the southern tulip.

Planting and care

Plant your tulips as soon as possible in a well-drained soil. Loosen the soil deeply. Plant at a depth of 15 cm (6in) (Bulbs should be covered with twice their height of soil). Space the bulbs a few cm apart, making sure they do not touch. Choose a sunny exposure for better flowering. After flowering, cut the flower stems and allow the leaves to dry completely before cutting them. After flowering, their foliage becomes unsightly. We recommend planting Heucheras, Tiarellas, Brunneras, Bleeding Hearts, Cypress Spurge in the foreground of your flowerbeds. Their foliage will enhance the colours of your tulips and, throughout the season, they will elegantly hide their yellowed leaves.
