Description

The 'Lauren Michele' Water Lily Dahlia is a true gem for gardens inspired by romance. Its generous and long-lasting flowering consists of large pink flowers with a darker reverse, whose reflections are highly nuanced. Sometimes raspberry or even purple, they can also turn violet. This subtle ensemble is enhanced by a very careful arrangement of the petals. This range of colours, both rare and fascinating, contributes to the composition of character-filled flowerbeds and allows for beautiful and long-lasting bouquets to decorate the house.

Belonging to the asteraceae family, the Dahlia is a perennial with tubers that is sensitive to frost and needs to be stored in winter in most regions. It appreciates sunny exposures and prefers rich soils for a long and colourful flowering. Its upright and rather bushy habit gives it a place among flowerbeds alongside other summer flowers. Its hollow stems stand 90 to 110 cm (35 to 43in) tall and sometimes require staking. They bear opposite leaves composed of three to five finely toothed leaflets and a rather dark green colour. At the top, beautiful flowers proudly face the sun. They are made up of several rows of wide and slightly concave ligules, arranged in an orderly manner. Very tightly packed in the centre, they are smaller when they bloom, curled lengthwise, and form a denser, coloured heart. The further they move outwards, the larger they become, unfurling and lightening in colour, thus resembling water lily flowers. The ensemble blossoms and sometimes reaches a diameter of 10 cm (4in). The shades are multiple and varied. The ligules always display a reverse and a margin of a deeper shade, are very lightly veined, and hover between mauve, violet, or purple reflections.

Thanks to its unique colour palette, 'Lauren Michele' is a distinguished guest in flowerbeds with strong tones. Essential in ensembles ranging from pink to purple, it naturally blends with echinaceas, roses, and other dahlias. Find it the perfect companions in our 'white, pink, purple' inspiration.

Planting and care

The spreading Dahlia 'Lauren Michele' establishes itself as soon as the last frosts have passed. For abundant flowering, it is good to follow a few simple rules. Plant the tubers in a sunny location as soon as the last frost has passed, rich, fresh, and well-drained soils are perfect. However, stagnant moisture would promote tuber rot. Feel free to amend the soil with compost and sand if necessary. Work the soil deeply and enrich it, for example, with crushed horn or dehydrated blood. Place your tuber and crumble the soil well to fill the hole without air pockets. Your dahlia should be covered with about 6 cm (2in) of soil. At the end of planting, water abundantly once and then regularly for the first 6 weeks to help with rooting.

Dahlias are sensitive to cold, they need to be overwintered under shelter. In November, the first frosts blacken the foliage, so it is time to dig them up. Carefully unearth the tubers. Remove as much soil as possible. Let the foliage dry so that the tubers can replenish their reserves. Then cut the stems down to 10 cm (4in). Spread your bulbs in a crate on newspaper. Store them protected from frost in a dry, cool, and dark place, such as a frost-free garage or an attic. In the southern regions, close to the coast, where there are few frosty days per year, it is possible to leave them in place. In this case, simply cover the ground with a layer of leaves or straw for protection.

This tall dahlia, with its hollow stems, is not resistant to wind or heavy rain. To overcome this drawback, you can stake it but it's not very attractive. On the other hand, by pinching the stems early you can spread out the habit of the plant, which will offer more resistance to bad weather. Alternatively, you can remove the axillary flower buds to channel the flow of sap to a single flower, which will become larger and sturdier, though taller.
