Description

The 'Hapet Pastel' Decorative Dahlia with Small Flowers is characterized by modest-sized flowers, but full of petals, in soft shades. This variety develops tall stems at the top of which bloom double flowers in a mix of peach pink and chick yellow that are perfect for making bouquets. A abundant and prolonged flowering, from July until the frosts, allowing beautiful associations in mixed borders or romantic compositions.

The Dahlias are tuberous plants from the large asteraceae family, originally from the high plateaus of Mexico. Currently, the thousands of horticultural varieties obtained by humans have invaded, to our great pleasure, gardens worldwide. Dahlias are classified according to the shape of their flower. 'Hapet Pastel' is classified in the category of Decorative Dahlias, and in the sub-category of decorative dahlias with small flowers. In this group, the colourful ligules of the head are arranged regularly in a spiral, they can be curved towards the stem or fringed for example. In this variety, the heads measure 10-11 cm in diameter and their ligules are ovate and pointed, concave, curved downwards. The flowering takes place from July to October-November. The plant will reach on average 1.20 m to 1.50 m in height, and 60 cm in width, with a bushy and erect habit. The very branched stems are hollow and the leaves are opposite, pinnatisect, meaning they divide into 3 or 5 leaflets, which form very denticulate lobes. The leaves and stems are of a fairly light green colour.

To promote floral reflowering and extend the flowering period, be sure to remove faded flowers. Even better, create attractive colourful bouquets by combining different varieties. Decorative Dahlias pair well with gauras and cleomes that will lighten their generous silhouette. 'Hapet Pastel' flowers also make wonderful bouquets, with roses and grasses. The fairly tall size of this variety makes it suitable for the centre of mixed borders, to structure a composition of bushy foliage and lower plants. The flowering of Coneflowers is perfect to accompany that of Dahlias, they occur simultaneously, as well as that of perennial salvias for example.

A highlight in cottage gardens, Dahlias are undoubtedly beautiful flowers, they are impeccable in flower beds, but can also enhance the vegetable garden. In Mexico, this tuber was initially grown as a root vegetable for consumption. Its poor taste quickly relegated it to the status of an ornamental plant. Since then, the interest in their beautiful exuberance has never waned.

Planting and care

The Dahlia Hapet Pastel is easy to grow in all regions. For a generous flowering, it is good to follow a few simple rules, plant the tubers in a sunny location from the last frosts, rich, fresh and well-drained soils are perfect. However, stagnant moisture would promote tuber rot. Feel free to amend the soil with compost and sand if necessary. Work the soil deeply and enrich it with crushed horn or dehydrated blood for example. Place your tuber and crumble the soil well to refill without air pockets. Your dahlia should be covered with about 6 cm of soil. At the end of planting, water generously once and then renew this watering regularly during the first 6 weeks to help with rooting.

Dahlias are sensitive to cold, they need to be overwintered. In November, the first frosts darken the foliage, it is time to dig them up. Carefully unearth the tubers. Remove as much soil as possible. Let the foliage dry so that the tubers can replenish their reserves. Then cut the stems to 10 cm. Spread your bulbs in a crate on a newspaper. Store them away from frost in a dry, cool and dark place, such as a frost-free garage or a loft for example. In southern regions, close to the coast, experiencing only a few days of frost per year, it is possible to leave them in place. In this case, simply cover the ground with a layer of leaves or straw for protection.

This tall Dahlia, with its hollow stems, is still sensitive to strong winds or heavy rains. To overcome this drawback, you can stake it, but let's agree, it's not very aesthetic. However, by pinching the stems early or removing the axial flower buds, you will spread out the habit of the plant which will offer more resistance to bad weather. At the same time, you channel the flow of sap to a single flower that will become larger and stronger.
