Description

The Dahlia 'Saint Martin' belongs to the group of decorative dahlias with small flowers. It offers elegant double flowers, beautifully shaped, with wide white petals tinged with dark pink at the tips or in the middle. The centre is marked with lime green and yellow. They are borne by strong stems ideal for flower arrangements. Easy to grow, this lovely bush finds its place in a flower bed alongside other dahlias for example, or brightens up your vegetable garden.

From the Asteraceae family, dahlias are tuberous plants originating from the high plateaus of Mexico. Currently, there are thousands of horticultural varieties that have conquered gardens worldwide. Dahlias are classified according to the shape of their flowers. The variety 'Saint Martin' is part of the decorative dahlias with small flowers. Decorative dahlias are characterized by ligules (or petals) arranged regularly in a spiral, they can be curved towards the stem or fringed. Here, the ligules are oval and flat. The flowering of Dahlia 'Saint Martin' extends from July until the first frosts. It offers flowers of about 10 cm in diameter. The bushy and upright plant has green leaves, divided into 3 or 5 leaflets. It reaches a height of 80 to 90 cm at maturity.

To promote flowering and extend it at the same time, make sure to remove the faded flowers as you go. Feel free to create lovely rustic bouquets, focusing on the complementary colours and shapes of the flowers. To do this, combine several dahlias in a flower bed or plant several varieties in the vegetable garden. The flowers of dahlia 'Saint Martin' will blend beautifully with those of different-shaped Dahlias, such as Anemone Dahlias or Cactus Dahlias, for example, in pink or red tones. Undisputed stars of cottage gardens, decorative dahlias pair well with gauras with white or pink flowers and cleomes with a light appearance. Also consider Echinaceas and salvias like Papajan bush sage with salmon pink flowers.

Planting and care

The decorative Dahlia 'Saint Martin' is easy to grow in all regions. Here are some simple rules to follow to enjoy its beautiful and generous flowering. Plant the tubers in the sun after the last frosts. A rich, moist, and well-drained soil will be greatly appreciated. Avoid any stagnant moisture that promotes tuber rot. Amend your soil with compost (for poor soil) and sand (for drainage) if necessary. Work your soil deeply and enrich it with crushed horn or dehydrated blood, as preferred. Place your tuber and crumble the soil around it to fill any air pockets. Your dahlia should be covered with about 6 cm of soil. Water generously at planting and regularly during the first six weeks to help with rooting.

Dahlias are sensitive to cold, so they need to be overwintered. In November, the first frosts blacken the foliage, signaling it's time to dig them up. Carefully unearth the tubers, removing as much soil as possible. Let the foliage dry so the tubers can replenish their reserves. Then, cut the stems to 10 cm. Spread your tubers in a crate on a newspaper. Store them in a frost-free, dry, cool, and dark place, such as a frost-free garage or attic. In southern regions near the coast, experiencing few frosty days per year, it may be possible to leave them in place. In this case, simply cover the soil with a thick mulch (leaves, straw, etc.).

Pinch the stems early (from the 3rd or 4th week after planting) to make your dahlia more compact and ramified, and therefore more resistant to bad weather (wind, rain). To do this, use your nails to cut the terminal shoots just above the previous leaves. Otherwise, you can always opt for staking, but the aesthetic result may not be to everyone's taste.

Slugs and snails are very fond of these young shoots. Protect them!
