Graden Merit
An adorable little orchid with beautiful flowers. The blooms are large compared to the size of the plant. The flowers appear in March-April, just before the leaves unfold. Their petals and sepals are a slightly mauve-pink, and the fringed trumpet-shaped lip is white with brown-orange speckles inside. Ideally, grow it in an orchid substrate. It is sensitive to cold, so is most often cultivated in a pot to overwinter in an almost dry area, sheltered from frost. If planted in a very dry rock garden in winter, it can withstand short frosts of -8 to -10°C (17.6 to 14°F).

Description

Pleione formosana is a beautiful terrestrial orchid with spotted pinkish-lilac flowers. It is easy to cultivate in protected gardens.

This bristly, rhizomatous bulbous plant develops a single 15cm (6in) long leaf that is lanceolate, elliptical, and folded. It is a lovely medium green colour. From April to May, 10cm (4in) stems bear solitary 8cm (3in) flowers. They are pinkish-lilac with a trumpet-shaped white labellum spotted with brown, with fringed pink edges.

Originally from China and Taiwan, Pleione formosana is semi-hardy. In open ground, this small orchid likes humus-bearing soil without too much limestone. The soil should be moist but well-drained or even porous. It prefers a semi-shaded or sunny position. In winter, place a layer of dead leaves or a bell jar to protect the bulbs. Pot cultivation is possible.

Pleione formosana adds a unique touch to miniature gardens, shaded rockeries, or in groups at the base of a tree.

Tip: it is essential that the soil does not dry out after flowering. This is when the pseudo-bulb grows and multiplies.

Planting and care

Pleione formosana loves very sheltered environments and partial shade. It prefers soils with light humus. The soil should remain slightly moist between March and September, but dry during winter. The rootstock will rot in winter humidity combined with frost. In very dry soil, the young plant can withstand a short frost of around -8 to -10 °C (17.6 to 14°F) at most. In rockeries, winter protection is essential against the cold, but also against humidity. To do this, place a 20cm (8in) layer of leaf compost or crushed bark on the stump, and put an impermeable protection on top of the layer.

Growing in large pots or planters is entirely possible. Use an orchid substrate or a mixture of 60% ericaceous soil, 20% horticultural compost, and 20% coarse sand.

Pleiones are quite demanding plants during the growing season. A weekly dose of geranium-type fertiliser at half strength from mid-May to mid-September will be very beneficial.

Pleiones hate limestone, hot and dry summers, wind, dry atmospheres, and cold and humid winters.

The rootstock located at the base of the plant should not be completely buried. At least half its height should protrude. Water with non-limestone and non-chlorinated water.

Bring potted plants into a cold greenhouse during winter.
