Description
The seeds of China Aster or Callistephus chinensis 'Matsumoto White' produce a multitude of semi-double white heads. Its bushy, well-ramified habit, combined with strong stems of good height, makes it a plant as elegant as it is useful as a cut flower. It is easy to grow in fertile, cool but well-drained soil, in a sunny position. This annual flower is fairly resistant to fusarium and easy to grow and to bring into flower.
The China Aster, Callistephus chinensis, also nicknamed Chinese Aster, is an annual Chinese plant from the Asteraceae family. This flower, of very ancient cultivation, has given rise to many varieties for borders and cut flowers. 'Matsumoto White' reaches 70 to 80 cm in height within a few weeks. The plants form well-ramified clumps, with robust stems bearing ovate leaves with dentate edges. The flowers are semi-double heads, 5 cm in diameter, of a pure, luminous white, contrasting with a golden-yellow centre. They bloom from June to September. Each plant germinates, flowers, then dies in autumn.
The China Aster 'Matsumoto White' integrates elegantly into displays where light and texture subtly interact. Its flowers borne on slender stems bring a soothing verticality to summer borders. Plant or sow it in large clumps, and pick the flowers to create rustic cut flower arrangements throughout the fine season. Pair it with cosmos, snapdragons and perennial sages with blue or purple flowers like 'Mainacht', 'Caradonna' or 'Lyrical Blues'.

Planting and care
Sowing 'Matsumoto White' Shasta Daisies: It is preferable not to sow these plants in the same location for two consecutive years. Sow outdoors from April to May, then transplant into position as soon as the young plants have 2 to 4 leaves, spaced 40 cm apart, in well-loosened, fresh, and well-manured soil, having chosen a very sunny spot. Water frequently, but sparingly. It is beneficial to transplant several times while keeping the rootball intact to encourage root development and slightly slow down stem growth, which could otherwise break under the weight of the flowers. To achieve earlier flowering, sow under a cold frame or on a hotbed, in seed trays, from February to April. Sow the Shasta Daisies in trays filled with sand and blonde turf under cover at a temperature of 16 to 20 °C. Carry out a transplant into individual small pots when the seedlings have at least four leaves. Plant them out in the garden when they reach a height of 15 cm. Install stakes to support the taller varieties with very double flowers.
A later sowing in June allows for staggered flowering until the end of autumn. The sowing can then be done directly in position in the garden.
These plants like a neutral or slightly calcareous, very fertile and well-drained soil and require a very sunny exposure. Generous watering will be necessary twice a week during dry periods, but care must be taken to water the base and not the foliage, as Shasta Daisies are susceptible to powdery mildew. Remember to remove faded flowers as they appear to prolong flowering and prevent weakening of the plant.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
