Description

Lobelia cardinalis 'Queen Victoria' is a perennial herbaceous plant with heart-shaped purple foliage and long spikes of scarlet red flowers. These flowers bloom from late August to October and attract butterflies.

Its upright habit and its height of 80cm (32in) make it suitable for the back of borders. This lobelia brightens up the background with its vibrant red colour that stands out from its dark foliage. The elongated spikes bear 5cm (2in) corolla flowers that separate into 2 lips. The upper lip divides in two, while the lower lip divides in three, giving it the appearance of a small insect with antennae.

This Lobelia is interesting for its late and generous flowering. It prefers light, rich, and moist soil and will even thrive by the edge of a pond. Place it in full sun or partial shade. It pairs perfectly with grasses thanks to its rich colours.

Attention, these seeds are reserved for experienced gardeners who are used to sowing very fine seeds. These seeds are as fine as dust and barely visible to the naked eye.

Planting and care

The seeds of Lobelia cardinalis 'Queen Victoria' can be sown under cover in a tray from March, even February in the mildest regions or under glass, as germination will occur between 16°C (60.8°F) and 18°C (64.4°F).

Just cover the seeds with a thin layer of compost (1 to 2 mm (0in)) kept slightly moist and in the sun (essential for germination). They will germinate in 2 to 3 weeks. When the seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into pots(7/8cm (3in)). Later, when the plant is well developed, you can put it in its final place. Choose a well-drained soil and sunny location.

As with other perennials, sowing can also be done in summer to transplant to their final place in autumn.
