Description

The Petunia 'Waves' Mixed is a high-quality variety of petunia. Its long trailing stems are covered in a profusion of flowers in two shades of bright pink from June to the first frost. It remarkably withstands rain. Ideal for containers and hanging baskets as well as borders or ground cover.

It is a highly valued plant with great ornamental value, owing to its generosity and flowering duration.

The Petunia 'Waves' Mixed has a compact habit, reaching a height of 15 cm (6in). Its long stems can grow up to 90 cm (35in) in length. You can place it in the garden, along borders in a bed, or in pots, containers or hanging baskets where it will look stunning on its own or accompanied by Ornamental Tobacco, Vepita Verbena, or even with Sweet Caroline Morning Glories for a modern and contrasting effect.

Originating from South America and belonging to the Solanaceae family (like Ornamental Tobacco and... potatoes!), Petunia, or Petunia x hybrida, is an annual herbaceous plant. It bears charming bell-shaped flowers on elongated stems, varying in size and colour depending on the variety. Its leaves are slightly pubescent, with smooth edges and dark green. It blooms from June onwards and lasts until the first frost.

Petunia thrives in sunny and sheltered locations. It should be planted in rich, light, and well-draining soil or substrate. It is easy to cultivate but requires a lot of water.

To encourage and support its long flowering period, it is advisable to regularly remove faded flowers and provide a potassium-rich fertiliser, especially in pots and containers, to promote the growth of new flowers.

Attention, seeds reserved for highly experienced gardeners who are used to sowing very fine seeds. These seeds are as fine as dust, barely visible to the naked eye.

Planting and care

Sow petunias from February to April on the surface of good seed compost and gently firm. Lightly cover the seeds with a thin layer of vermiculite or sieved compost. Place the seed tray in a propagator (or enclose it in a polythene bag) or on top of a radiator at a temperature of 21 to 25 °C (69.8 to 77°F). Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Light aids germination, which usually takes 10 to 21 days. When the young petunia plants are large enough to handle, transplant them. Gradually acclimatise the plants to cooler conditions until they are strong enough to be planted outside once all risk of frost has passed. Transplant them into well-drained soil at a distance of 30 cm (12in) or grow them in pots or containers.
