Description

Fuchsia ‘Ernie’ is a compact hybrid variety with an upright habit, prized for its long flowering period and the elegance of its small bicolour, bell-shaped flowers. Its single flowers, which combine a bright red-pink with a luminous white, offer a fresh and vibrant contrast. This variety is perfect for flowering pots, planters, and cool spots on the patio.

Belonging to the Onagraceae family, Fuchsia ‘Ernie’ is part of the vast group of horticultural hybrid fuchsias, resulting from cross-breeding between several botanical species. It is also known under the horticultural synonym 'Sunbeam Ernie'. It is a protected cultivar, introduced in the early 2000s. The plant forms a small bush with an erect, dense, and naturally branched habit, reaching approximately 40 cm in height and width. The stems have a tender green to reddish hue depending on exposure, and are quite flexible. The foliage is deciduous to semi-evergreen, depending on conditions: the opposite, oval to lanceolate, finely toothed, bright green leaves beautifully set off the flowers. From June-July until the first frosts, sometimes as early as May under shelter, small pendulous bell-shaped flowers emerge from the leaf axils. They are single, formed of an elongated tube, four fuchsia-red to deep pink, well-spaced sepals, and a white corolla lightly veined with pink. The prominent stamens add a touch of finesse to the whole. Each flower is small and delicate, but their uninterrupted succession gives the plant a generous appearance.

Fuchsia ‘Ernie’ can be used in pots, but also at the front of a seasonal bed in a sheltered location. On the patio, it pairs well with the acid-green foliage of Ipomoea ‘Sweet Caroline Light Green’, the lemony softness of Carex oshimensis Everillo®, the coppery reflections of Heuchera ‘Marmalade’, and the silvery trailing habit of Dichondra argentea ‘Silver Falls’. These companions highlight the delicacy of its flowers without overshadowing them and create colourful, cheerful pot displays from early summer until autumn.

Discovered in Santo Domingo in the 17th century and acclimatised in Europe, it was named Fuchsia (not Fuschia) in honour of a German botanist named Fuchs. Originating from South America, botanical Fuchsias were gradually propagated. Today, it is estimated there are around ten thousand hybrids!

Planting and care

Plant your Ernie fuchsias in a rich, moist, and well-drained substrate, in sun or partial shade. Fuchsias require plenty of light to flower well, but they are sensitive to full summer sun (even more so in southern regions). Water regularly, as they are susceptible to drought, but avoid overwatering.
When grown in pots, ensure no water remains in the saucer, as this can cause root rot and leaf drop. Feed with a liquid fertiliser for fuchsias every fortnight during the growing period. Regularly remove faded flowers and dry leaves. You can pinch back young shoots to encourage the plant to branch out and produce more flowers, which are always borne on the current year's shoots. Cut back in autumn after flowering. Fuchsias can also be grown indoors, where they are perennial and evergreen.
