Description

Hedera helix 'White Wonder', derived from the common ivy, is a remarkable climbing plant, appreciated for its elegant variegated foliage and moderate growth. This variety of ivy is decorative and easy to cultivate and maintain. It is often used to dress walls, as ground cover, in hanging baskets, or in a flower pot with other plants. It can also be grown indoors.

Ivies belong to the Araliaceae family. The Hedera genus includes about a dozen species, the most common in our latitudes being the Common Ivy, known in Latin as Hedera helix. This giant of our forests can reach lengths of tens of metres and climb to the tops of trees.

Common Ivy 'White Wonder' is a cream-white variegated form of the 'Wonder' variety, more vigorous but less branching. It is characterised by its small, yet wide, three-lobed leaves, coarsely toothed and leathery in texture. They are randomly splashed and/or edged in cream-white on a two-tone green background. The plant has vigorous growth and can reach a height of 3 to 4 metres. It retains its leaves all year round. Common Ivy 'White Wonder' rarely flowers indoors, but when grown outdoors, it can produce flowers in late summer or early autumn, followed by black berries.
The very hardy 'White Wonder' ivy can withstand temperatures down to approximately -18°C, and can be grown virtually anywhere without requiring any special maintenance.

Hedera helix 'White Wonder' is a versatile plant that can be used in various ways in the garden or indoors. It is perfect for decorating shaded areas, whether on a terrace or in the garden. It can be grown in hanging baskets, allowed to climb along a wall, or planted in a planter or a large flower pot. This plant pairs well with other plants that thrive in similar woodland settings. For instance, it can be combined with ferns, hostas, fuchsias, or bleeding hearts to create a harmonious and balanced display.

Planting and care

Hedera helix 'White Wonder' is easy to grow in any regular soil and can be planted all year round. It prefers fertile, moist, well-drained soil, but is very adaptable (regarding the presence of limestone or clay if the soil is well worked) and quite resistant to drought once established. Ideally, plant it against a wall, in a semi-shaded position sheltered from cold winds to help it establish, and water during the first 2 years after planting, especially in dry summers. To promote young shoots more quickly, fix the first ones to the ground (layering). You can rejuvenate the base by removing old branches. Prune regularly to shape it. Remove, if necessary, branches that bear non-variegated leaves or those that take on an upright, bushy form.

For container growing, mix 7 parts regular soil, 3 parts peat, and 2 parts sand. Water regularly and feed every month during the growing season. Keep the substrate moist during winter.
