Description

The Delice de Malicorne® 'Agoudel' Sweet Cherry Tree is a variety that produces very large sweet fruits appreciated for baking. The firm and crunchy flesh is surrounded by a black skin at ripeness. It is a vigorous and highly productive tree, however, as it is not self-fertile, it will require the proximity of another cherry tree. Flowering starts at the end of March and harvest takes place between June and July.

The Cherry Tree, Prunus avium, belongs to the Rosaceae family. It is a medium-sized tree, reaching 5 to 10m (16 to 33ft) in height at maturity. Its rounded habit provides a beautiful shaded space, very pleasant during the summer. Its alternate dentate leaves are glossy and dark green, then take on a lovely reddish hue in autumn before falling. The Delice de Malicorne® variety produces very large, juicy and tasty fruits. These cherries are harvested when the skin has become very dark, almost black, enjoy them just after picking or cooked in pies, clafoutis, jams or crumbles. Cherries are rich in vitamin C, minerals and trace elements.

From the end of March, Delice de Malicorne® is covered with small white flowers that appear before the foliage. They are self-sterile, so they will need to be pollinated by another variety planted within a radius of 30m (98ft) around. 'Burlat' Sweet Cherry is an excellent pollinating variety in general and 'Belle Magnifique' Sweet Cherry also works very well. The harvest can be more or less abundant depending on the year and can present an alternating (biennial bearing) phenomenon, allowing the tree to replenish its reserves. Cherries should be picked when ripe, as they do not ripen further after harvest.

Fruit production becomes optimal after 5 to 6 years in this variety. Cherry trees are hardy trees, they can withstand temperatures down to -20 °C (-4°F) while the flowers are damaged from -2 °C (28.4°F). However, as flowering occurs quite late in the season, the most destructive frosts are avoided. Suitable for all regions, cherry trees can be planted on a lawn, at the back of a flowerbed, or in an orchard.

For transport reasons, our tallest scions may be pruned before shipping. They are suitable for all common training sizes: cordons, espaliers, goblets, half-standards and low standards, except for the high standard training. If you would like more information or advice on training your fruit trees, please do not hesitate to contact us.

This fruit tree is delivered in a ready-to-plant root ball. During planting, the root ball must be planted as is. The biodegradable tontine that surrounds the root ball and preserves the rootlets will decompose naturally during the plant's growth. In doing so, you ensure better establishment.

Planting and care

Easy to grow, the cherry tree thrives in any type of soil, whether acidic or alkaline. It prefers moist, light soils and dislikes heavy, clayey soils. Choose a sunny site. To minimise the risk of late frost damage to the flowers, it is recommended to plant the cherry tree in a sheltered area, facing west and protected from cold winds in regions that experience spring frosts. Planting is preferably done in autumn. If you plant multiple trees, space them 4 to 5 metres (13 to 16 feet) apart for goblet-trained plants.

Loosen the soil deeply, remove stones and unwanted weeds. Add some sand to improve drainage. Dig a hole 4 to 5 times the volume of the root ball. Make sure to separate the subsoil and the topsoil. Mix crushed horn or well-rotted compost or potting soil with the subsoil and pour this mixture into the bottom of the planting hole. Install a stake. Place the root ball, cover with the topsoil, and firm it down. Water generously (about 10L).  Tie the stake to the plant, crossing the tie in a figure-eight shape without touching the trunk.

During cultivation watering is not necessary except in the case of high heat. Mulch at the base to keep it cool in summer. Protect your harvest by installing either a bird net, aluminum foil, or old CDs. In case of aphid attack, spray with soapy water.

Care

Pruning instructions Cherry trees are pruned in green, which means when they still have leaves, just after the harvest. This pruning should remain superficial and is often not necessary. Cutting large sections should be very occasional as it weakens the trees a lot. The use of mastic on wounds will limit the flow of gum that weakens the subject. At the end of autumn, remove dead branches and those that cross inside, in order to allow air and light to circulate in the middle of the tree.
Pruning Pruning recommended once a year
Pruning time July to September
Soil moisture Tolerant
Disease resistance Good
Overwinter Can be left in the ground
