Description

Episcia cupreata ‘Country Brilliance’ is a tropical houseplant with a creeping and trailing habit, prized for its particularly dark, velvety foliage. A deep green nuanced with coppery brown, it serves as a setting for its small red flowers. A close relative of African violets, this "flame violet" quickly forms a dense, colourful carpet. It will delight those seeking a shade-loving plant with character, for hanging baskets, bowls, or terrariums.

Episcia cupreata belongs to the Gesneriaceae botanical family. This species is native to the tropical forests of South America, notably Brazil, Colombia, and Venezuela, where it grows in humid undergrowth, as groundcover, or along shaded streams. Among its synonyms are Achimenes cupreata and Episcia splendens.
The cultivar ‘Country Brilliance’ is a horticultural selection with particularly dark foliage. The plant develops short, villous stems that produce numerous reddish stolons, creeping or trailing, each bearing a rosette of leaves. These are ovate to slightly elliptical, 5 to 10 cm long, deeply quilted and villous. Their colour ranges from very dark green to a deep coppery brown, highlighted by metallic sheens, with lighter veins and a purplish underside. The clump reaches 15 to 20 cm in height and about 30 cm in spread, more if the stolons are allowed to run. The tubular flowers, red to orange-red with a lighter throat, open into five rounded lobes from spring to autumn, or even almost year-round under good conditions, but this flowering is relatively rare indoors.
Episcia is considered non-toxic to humans and pets.

In indoor cultivation, this plant prefers soft, indirect light or bright shade, without direct sun, as well as warm and fairly humid air, with temperatures between 18 and 28 °C. It does not tolerate draughts and dry atmospheres well. It is a plant suited for beginners, provided overwatering is avoided and a certain ambient humidity is maintained. It thrives particularly well in a bright living room, a well-lit bathroom, a warm conservatory, or a large tropical terrarium.

This Episcia ‘Country Brilliance’ is perfect in hanging baskets, from which its stolons trail naturally, but also in bowls placed up high. In a terrarium, place it in the foreground to highlight plants with lighter leaves. You can pair it with a Fittonia 'Mini White' with white veins, Peperomia caperata 'Luna' or Pilea 'Moon Valley'; a small fern such as Nephrolepis exaltata 'Bostoniensis' can complete the display. This creates a tropical display rich in textures and vibrant in colour.

Maintenance and care

Watering tips

Water moderately when the substrate is dry to a depth of 2-3 cm. Grow in ambient humidity above 50-60% but avoid direct misting of the leaves.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot the plant every 2 to 3 years, in spring. Use a slightly larger pot.
Use a mixture of African violet compost or very light and porous, well-drained soil, with perlite and clay pebbles to promote drainage.
Apply a liquid fertiliser specially formulated for foliage plants (NPK 10-10-10) from March to September (spring-summer) every two weeks, diluted in the watering water.

Houseplant care

Remove any unwanted runners regularly to maintain the plant's appearance. Avoid wetting the foliage when watering to reduce the risk of fungal diseases.
No specific pruning is required. However, it is possible to pinch back the stems after flowering to encourage branching and maintain a compact shape.

Disease and pest advice

Medium susceptibility to diseases (if maintenance is regular and appropriate). In case of scale insect infestation, clean the leaves with a cloth soaked in 70° alcohol diluted in soapy water. Grow with good ventilation to avoid fungal diseases.
