Same as with the Trollius, I received the Astilbe completely dried out because the manager of the shop didn't realize there was something alive inside the package... before closing his shop for three consecutive days!

Description

Perennial plants for heavy and moist soil, astilbes are essential plants on the banks of a pond and in marshy areas. They prefer locations which are partly shaded or without direct sunlight. They flower from June to July, filling a gap when spring blooms come to an end and summer blooms are just beginning. Astilbes bear panicles of very colourful flowers, pink, white or red depending on the variety.

Astilbe x arendsii Diamant brightens up shady gardens. This hybrid perennial blooms from July to August with large feathery panicles of cream-white flowers. Its green foliage is deciduous.

Also known as Arends' astilbe, it can reach a height of up to 80 cm (32in) when fully grown. You can plant it in a damp bed, in the shade, on the banks of a pond or pool. It is interesting in bouquets, and the flower stalks can also be dried.

Astilbe arendsii is often associated with Japanese anemones, hostas, Siberian irises, ligularias, ferns, heucheras, rodgersias, and generally with all plants in a moist environment.

Planting and care

Astilbe thrives in partial shade, you can plant it in gentle sunlight, but avoid the hot midday sun. It is a trouble-free plant. Plant it in spring or autumn in moist, well-drained soil, rich in organic matter. It prefers fertile soils. You can put it in a marshy area but not in chalky soil as it is susceptible to drying out. To plant, work the soil well in an area of 20 cm (8in) and place a base fertiliser at the bottom of the planting hole. Remove your plant from its pot and position covering the top of the root ball with 3 cm (1in) of soil. Then fill in and water thoroughly to remove any air pockets. In dry weather, water regularly for a few weeks to aid rooting. Astilbe requires very little maintenance, just keep the soil moist and add compost and fertilizer in spring. In winter the flowers and young foliage can be damaged by spring frosts. After flowering, cut back the flower stems to encourage the foliage. In November, cut the plants back to around 10 cm (4in). Resistant to slugs, it can be susceptible to powdery mildew and fungal spots.

Pruning instructions Prune the faded flowers to promote better foliage development. The flower stalks can be left in place if you wish to decorate the garden during winter, simply remove them the following spring by cutting back to 10 cm (4in). It is important to avoid digging near these plants, as the rootstocks develop near the surface. These plants are resistant to diseases and rarely attacked by insects. While they are unaffected by slugs, they may be susceptible to powdery mildew and fungal spots.
