Description

The charming Geum 'Lemon Drops' is a magnificent English cultivar with purple stems and lemon-yellow bell-shaped flowers. These delicate and graceful flowers will refresh flower beds with their tangy shades!

Presumably a hybrid of Geum rivale, 'Lemon Drops' is an erect herbaceous perennial, belonging to the Rosaceae family. It is robust and hardy, growing well in both shade and sun. It forms a compact clump of large pinnate basal leaves, which are medium green and semi-evergreen. The plant measures 20 to 30cm (8 to 12in) in all directions. Slender reddish and villous branched stems rise from the clump. From May to July, the stems bear pale lemon-yellow flowers on long peduncles with greenish-brown sepals.

Geum 'Lemon Drops' is an easy, accommodating plant, suitable for sunny as well as semi-shade positions, in ordinary, moist but well-drained soil. To fully enjoy its magnificent flowering, plant it at the edge of flower beds, borders, mixed borders, and in rock gardens. Requiring some space to grow well, it is important to leave a clear space around its base. It will blend beautifully with other spring and summer flowering perennials such as indigo lupins, perennial potentillas, and Anemone De Caen. In semi-shade, it will associate well with cow parsleys, fairy flowers, columbines, heucheras, hellebores, euphorbias, and astilbes. Sublime colour harmonies can be created by mixing several varieties of avens together.

Planting and care

Geum 'Lemon Drops' is a completely hardy plant, easy to grow, very accommodating, and low maintenance. It prefers a partially shaded to shaded location, but also tolerates sunny spots that are not scorching. It will thrive in moist, average to rich, light, well-drained soil, but can also tolerate drier and poorer soil, even slightly chalky. Planting can be done in spring or autumn. Regularly remove faded flowers to encourage the emergence of new flower buds and ensure a late summer flowering. It is recommended to divide the clumps every 3 or 4 years, in spring or autumn.
