Description

The Woolly Everlasting ‘Silver Mist’ (Helichrysum microphyllum) is an interesting ornamental plant prized for its small, silvery, silky, and very luminous foliage. It is small, forming a dense and regular cushion in beds, borders, planters, or hanging baskets. It is very easy to grow in full sun and well-drained soil, with little water, and it is often cultivated as an annual. Its silvery colour enhances all colourful flowering and integrates perfectly into architectural or Mediterranean compositions, both in pots and in the ground. To preserve it, overwinter in a bright, frost-free location.

Helichrysum microphyllum 'Silver Mist', also known by the common names Woolly Everlasting 'Silver Mist' or Silver Everlasting, belongs to the Asteraceae family. This cultivar is sometimes listed under the botanical synonyms Helichrysum petiolare 'Microphyllum' or Helichrysum petiolare 'Silver Mist'. Native to Mediterranean regions, particularly Corsica, Sardinia, and southern Italy, the species Helichrysum microphyllum grows naturally in scrub vegetation, garrigue, and rocky areas, often at altitude.

The 'Silver Mist' cultivar was selected for its particularly silvery foliage and its compactness. This plant is a semi-hardy perennial, which perishes below -5°C. It has a habit that is both bushy and spreading, forming a dense cushion of flexible and branching stems. Its growth is rapid, the clump reaching a height of 15 to 20 cm and a width of 45 to 60 cm in the ground. In pots, its dimensions are slightly reduced, with a height of about 15 cm and a width of 30 to 45 cm. The foliage is the main attraction of 'Silver Mist'. The leaves are small, ovate to elliptical, 1 to 2 cm long and covered with a silvery down that gives them a silky texture. This foliage is evergreen when frost-free. The stems are also silvery, thin and slightly woody at the base. The flowering of 'Silver Mist' is discreet and not very ornamental. The small and pale yellow flowers appear in summer but are often removed to encourage foliage development.

Helichrysum microphyllum ‘Silver Mist’ integrates wonderfully into Mediterranean beds, dry rockeries, or as a border plant. In pots or hanging baskets, it creates a beautiful silvery mist effect, superb with brightly coloured flowering plants (geranium-pelargonium, petunias and surfinias, salvias…). Its fine texture lightens dense compositions. It is an excellent linking plant between larger specimens that can also serve as ground cover in dry areas. It finds a place in contemporary, naturalistic, or Provencal-style gardens and is an excellent plant for sunny terraces and balconies.

Planting and care

Sow Helichrysum 'Silver Mist' from February to March-April, in a tray under heated cover. Use a light, fine and well-drained substrate, such as seed compost. Sow the seeds on the surface, without covering them, as they need light to germinate. Maintain a constant temperature of 22 to 24 °C and slight humidity, without excess water. Germination generally occurs within 8 to 10 days. Once the seedlings are sufficiently developed, prick them out into individual pots. Plant in final position after the last frosts, in May.

In the ground, plant in very well-drained, even poor or stony soil, in full sun. Good drainage is essential: in heavy soils, provide a layer of gravel. Water at planting, then very little: the plant is drought-resistant once well-rooted.

In pots, choose a container with drainage holes and a very free-draining substrate (such as Mediterranean compost or a homemade mix of compost, sand and perlite). Avoid excess water and allow the substrate to dry on the surface before watering again. A gravel mulch can help limit evaporation without retaining moisture.

In mild climates, it behaves as an evergreen perennial, but in cold regions, it is better to grow it as an annual or overwinter it frost-free like a citrus plant.
