More information

A miniature hosta with foliage that is initially golden, then apple green, forming a small, dense and bright clump in the shade. Its thick, glossy leaves are unappealing to slugs and create a highly decorative cushion around the lavender flower spikes in summer. This very hardy cultivar thrives in rich, moist, well-drained soil. It can be planted in borders, at the base of shrubs or in a pot on a shaded terrace.

Description

Hosta Appletini is a miniature golden hosta with shiny foliage, useful to brighten up shady borders and small containers. Its thick leaves change from bright spring yellow to vibrant apple green in summer, while maintaining a lovely glossy appearance. When summer arrives, upright stems bear lavender bell-shaped flowers that rise above the foliage. This compact, very hardy, and fairly slug-resistant cultivar will find a place in a collector's garden or in a small shaded spot near the house, always in moist shade.

This hosta is a herbaceous perennial now classified in the Asparagaceae family. It originates from hybridisation between a golden sport of 'Blue Dimples' and 'Shining Tot', two small hostas. Registered in 2009 by the American breeder Mark Zilis, it is part of his "Tini" series, which groups together vigorous and well-coloured miniature hostas.
'Appletini' distinguishes itself from many other small golden hostas by the combination of very thick foliage, a marked shine, and surprisingly rapid growth for its size.
The plant forms a small, regular, cushion-like clump, 15 to 20 cm tall and 30 to 35 cm wide. The foliage is deciduous: it disappears in winter and re-emerges from the heart of the clump in spring. Each small leaf (a few centimetres long) is heart-shaped to ovate, borne on a short but sturdy petiole. The young leaves are a bright golden yellow, then turn chartreuse before becoming apple green in summer. Their smooth, very shiny surface and good thickness limit slug damage. Flower stems emerge from the clump from July to August, rise about ten centimetres above the foliage, and bear clusters of campanulate flowers, in shades of lavender to light mauve.

Due to its miniature size and luminous foliage, Hosta 'Appletini' is perfect at the front of a shady border, along a path, or in a pot placed near an entrance sheltered from direct sun. It will highlight the base of a hydrangea, Japanese maple, or columnar conifer. It can be paired with Athyrium niponicum Pictum, Brunnera macrophylla 'Mr Morse', and Heuchera 'Forever Purple'. More refined Epimedium 'Sphinx Twinkler' with its delicate flowers will nestle between their clumps in a woodland setting or a shaded border.

Planting and care

Plant Appletini hostas in spring or autumn. Hostas prefer a deep, rich, humus-bearing, loose soil, ideally neutral to acidic (and certainly low in lime), that remains moist to damp throughout the year. Position them in partial shade or dappled shade, in a location sheltered from strong winds.

Prepare a planting hole measuring 20 cm x 20 cm x 20 cm. If your soil is heavy, mix in an equal amount of compost with the crumbled soil, partially refill the hole, and place your young plant with its root ball so that the top of the ball is covered by 3 cm of soil. Adding a base fertiliser (dried blood, horn meal) will nourish your plant during its rooting period without risk of scorching. Ensure the collar is positioned well above soil level. Firm the soil and water thoroughly to eliminate air pockets. If the weather is dry, water regularly for a few weeks to help your plant establish. Also, water regularly during dry summers.

With their shared preference for damp places, slugs and snails are never far from hostas. Even though blue or variegated hostas often have thicker, tougher foliage that is less appealing to slugs, these plants still need protection. Protect your hosta plants by surrounding them with ferramol-based pellets (approved for organic agriculture), crushed eggshells, coffee grounds, woodchip mulch, or any dry, rough natural substance that deters them. Hedgehogs are the gardener's best allies in the fight against slugs and snails; unlike chickens, they do not dig up the soil or attack the fresh green shoots of young plants. Finally, some plants have a scent that repels slugs, such as wormwood and garlic.
