Description

Salvia Oriental Dove is a superb recent selection of shrubby sage, with large flowers in a mauve-violet hue, and the lower lips fringed with white. They bloom from May to November if the soil remains moist. Microphylla type salvias are drought-tolerant, remarkably floriferous and robust, but often moderately hardy: this one can withstand temperatures down to -11°C. Pair it with varieties in shades of fuchsia pink, blue, or orange flowers, purple or silver foliage.

Oriental Dove was bred in 2020. Microphylla or grahamii type salvias are woody perennial plants in the Lamiaceae family originating from the Mexican mountains and southern Arizona. Salvia Oriental Dove has a beautifully flexible bushy habit. It will quickly reach about 70 cm in height and 80 cm in diameter, within 2 to 3 years. The nectar-rich and honey-producing flowering is generous from late spring to late summer, until cold weather ends it. The elongated small flowers stand above the foliage, carried by very dark stems, in 20 cm spikes. They measure 2 cm in length and are a purple to violet hue highlighted with a white border. They only live for a day, covering the ground with their petals in the evening, but will already be replaced the next morning. The semi-evergreen foliage consists of small oval leaves with crinkled edges, in a glossy medium green, thick and aromatic, slightly sticky, releasing a strongly tangy essential oil with heat. They sometimes take on lovely yellow and purple hues in autumn.

'Oriental Dove' sage is a vigorous and elegant plant, growing quickly and brightening borders and terraces with its prolonged flowering. It thrives in well-drained, even poor, soil, in full sun or partial shade. Pair it with autumn pink asters, Californian poppies, tall sedums, as well as the red foliage of Loropetalum or the silvery leaves of artemisias. Seaside cinerarias, and some euphorbias (Euphorbia 'Ponte Leccia') will create a fascinating scene alongside it. On a terrace, place it in a large pot, accompanied by a Senecio 'Angel Wings' and fox tail amaranths for a magnificent harmony of colours.

Planting and care

This easy to grow, Small-leaved Sage can be planted all year round, except during frost periods. This Oriental Dove variety can withstand temperatures as low as -11°C, in well-drained soil, in full sun and sheltered from the wind. Place it in a sunny location or partial shade. It thrives in light, moist but well-drained soil, with its hardiness significantly reduced in heavy, waterlogged winter soil. It also tolerates dry soil, so it's better to forget to water it rather than to overwater. At planting, you can add a base fertiliser (horn). Apply a mulch at the base of the plant as the colder weather approaches, or cover it with winter fleece in very cold regions. Watering is beneficial in summer during prolonged dry spells. As for pruning, lightly trim the stems that affect symmetry and prune to 20 cm from the ground, after the last severe spring frosts (in March-April depending on the region). Remove faded flowers whenever possible.
