The bare root rose I received seems healthy... Planted in the ground, I'm now patiently waiting for it to take root...(or not?).

Description

The Château de la Batisse® Rose (‘delparisse’) has enormous charm: its flowers are very double, in the shape of crumpled stars, with an orange centre that softens into a luminous creamy pink, almost reaching white. Its repeat flowering and its beautiful fragrance create a charming and rather unusual spectacle from May until the frosts. Its gently original character will be appreciated in the garden, but also in cut flower arrangements.

Created by Arnaud Delbard, this rose was introduced in 2024 and named in honour of Château de la Bâtisse in Auvergne. Its cultivar name is ‘DELparisse’. It is officially classified in databases within the Hybrid Tea group, while Delbard presents it as a Floribunda rose (with clustered flowers); this dual interpretation is explained by its flowering in small clusters and its large-sized flowers.
This rose is the star of the Souvenirs d’Amour Parfumés collection by Georges Delbard, dedicated to very fragrant varieties reminiscent of old roses, notably Rose Lalande de Pomerol®, Nahema®, La Rose de Molinard®, Madame Figaro®, Domaine de Chantilly®...

The shrub has a compact, bushy habit, forming a regular mass; its thorny stems are quite long, well-suited for cut flowers. The plant reaches 60 to 80 cm in height with a 50 cm spread. The dark green and glossy foliage is deciduous: it is absent in winter and reforms in spring. The leaves are compound with 5 to 7 ovate, finely toothed leaflets.
The double flowers often have more than 80 petals. Arranged in an unusual star shape, they give the corolla a slightly crumpled and light appearance. Their colour gradually changes from deep orange to light orange, then to pinkish-white and creamy white at the end of blooming. They measure 9 cm in diameter. The strong fragrance is, according to Delbard, rich with floral accents (rose, lily of the valley, lily) and enhanced by fruity notes. The flowering repeats from May until the first frosts. This variety's disease resistance is respectable under good growing conditions.

The Château de la Batisse® Rose deserves a prime location and carefully selected companions. You can plant it in groups of 3 at the centre of a small bed, in a mass within a large flowering border, or associate it with small shrubs. It also adapts to container cultivation. Its orange gradient colouring will be enhanced by white flowers, but also by silver or purple foliage. For example, you could choose roses Annapurna® or White Meillandecor®, Artemisia 'Powis Castle' and Berberis thunbergii ‘Atropurpurea Nana’.

Planting and care

Plant your Château de la Batisse rose in a sunny position (or in light afternoon shade). Modern roses are tolerant, but do not appreciate shallow, poor and/or very dry soils in summer. They will adapt to any garden provided the ground is well-worked, deep, not too compact, very rich, and always slightly moist. To plant your rose, work the soil by breaking it up finely and adding a base fertiliser such as dried blood or dehydrated horn to the bottom of the planting hole. Water thoroughly after planting to eliminate air pockets. Water regularly for a few weeks to encourage root establishment.

Roses often become spotted or unsightly by late summer, but this is not a problem for their development. These spots are not harmful to the rose; it is a natural phenomenon.

Care

Pruning instructions Pruning modern repeat flowering roses is essential for flowering. It is carried out in three stages: 1. Maintenance pruning: Regularly shorten the shoots that have flowered during the season. To encourage repeat flowering in roses, remove faded flowers along with their stem and 2 or 3 leaves. 2. Autumn pruning: a light prune before the spring pruning. This is not recommended in regions with cold winters as it may weaken the shrub. 3. Spring pruning: in February-March, when the buds have become 2 to 3 cm long shoots, prune young, strong branches to a quarter of their length. Pruning always aims to open up the centre of the bush and remove dead wood, diseased branches, and weak shoots. The most vigorous ones are kept, usually 3 to 6 well-positioned branches to maintain a beautiful shape. Always prune at a slant, ½ cm or 1 cm above an outward-facing bud.
