Received rose bush perfectly packaged and appears healthy, I am waiting to see if it thrives in the spot where I planted it.

Description

Rosa Lalande de Pomerol is a modern hybrid tea rose with a compact, vigorous habit. This disease-resistant rose produces an abundance of flowers from May to October. This fragrant and richly coloured rose pays a vibrant tribute to the prestigious Lalande de Pomerol vineyard. Its fully double roses are of an incredibly bright pink-red, a velvety and deep colour reminiscent of the hue of the greatest vintages of this famous Bordeaux region. The complex scent of the flowers reveals fruity notes of lemon, mango, or red fruits that can be savoured in superb floral compositions.

Rosa Lalande de Pomerol ('Delcherot') is a modern bush rose with large clustered flowers launched in 2013 by the rose breeder Delbard, belonging to the series of roses 'Souvenirs of Scented Loves'. The bush has a compact habit and reaches an average size of 70cm (28in) in all directions at maturity. It has a rapid growth rate. It produces strong, spiny branches that bear dense foliage divided into large dentate leaflets of a shiny dark green. Throughout summer, the plant produces medium-sized flowers with an imperfect turbinate shape typical of hybrid tea roses while possessing the grace of old-fashioned roses. The fully double flowers are composed of satin petals whose colour ranges from red to magenta-pink, a colour also leaning towards wine-purple. Their scent is pronounced: rich, oriental, fruity, and herbaceous. The flowers are gathered in bouquets at the end of long shoots from the current year or by those that emerge from 2-year-old stems. The roses will continue to bloom until October if faded flowers are regularly removed. The foliage is particularly healthy. This rose already adorns the lands of the appellation, with more than 1200 bushes planted by the winegrowers of this region.

As explained by the rose breeder Delbard, the roses from this series are "voluptuous, romantic, and fragrant. These roses have the unique charm of old roses, memories of childhood and moments of rediscovered happiness!"

Rosa Lalande de Pomerol gives the adventurous gardener an opportunity to try an unusual pairing with a Vitis vinifera 'Purpurea', or a beautiful variegated Virginia creeper like Ampelopsis glandulosa 'Elegans', for example. It looks stunning in flower beds, in groups of 3 plants, in large monochromatic borders, or paired with white or red roses. It also blends well with light shrubs, perennials, and annuals such as gaura, paniculate baby's breath, campanulas, paniculate phlox, and tall foxgloves. It can be beautifully displayed in front of a boxwood or yew screen, or surrounded by a miniature hedge or a carefully organised maze, as in Italian or French gardens. One can also plant at its base a herbaceous clematis with blue flowers like Clematis heracleifolia or a Sollya heterophylla in mild climates. Its roses are gorgeous in bouquets, paired with lilies in summer or asters in autumn.

Planting and care

Plant in a sunny or lightly shaded position. Modern roses are tolerant, but do not like excessive limestone. They will adapt to any garden as long as the soil is well worked, not too heavy, and sufficiently rich. To plant your rose, work the soil by crumbling it and add fertiliser to the bottom of the planting hole (dried blood or dehydrated horn, for example). Water generously after planting to remove any air pockets. Water regularly for a few weeks to facilitate root development.

Avoid pruning too short in the first two years.

Roses are often stained or unsightly at the end of summer, but this will not hinder their development. These spots are a natural phenomenon and will not harm the rose.

Care

Pruning instructions Avoid pruning too short during the first two years. Pruning is essential for flowering. It is done in three steps: 1. Maintenance pruning: regularly shorten the branches that have flowered during the season. To encourage the reblooming of perpetual roses, remove the faded flowers along with their stem, leaving 2 or 3 leaves. 2. Preparatory pruning in autumn: light pruning that anticipates the proper spring pruning. It is not recommended in regions with cold winters in order to avoid weakening the bush. 3. Spring pruning: in February-March, when the buds have developed into shoots 2 to 3cm (1in) long, trim the young strong branches by a quarter of their length. Pruning always aims to clear the heart of the bush and remove dead wood, diseased branches, and weak shoots. The most vigorous branches, usually 3 to 6 well-positioned ones, will be kept to maintain an attractive habit. Always prune at a slant, ½ cm or 1cm (0.4in) above an outward-facing bud.
