Fargesia murielae Dino - Non-running bamboo
The bamboo is very bushy and provides immediate screening. It was also a bit taller than expected. However, I have reservations regarding the supposed sun exposure tolerance. I noticed that it struggled when exposed to the intense summer sun from the south (leaves curling in on themselves) even with good automatic watering. I am considering moving it to a less sun-exposed area. I bought 2 of them, and they both had the same issue.

The Fargesia murielae Dino is a vigorous and fast-growing non-invasive bamboo, perfectly suited for creating a small hedge or a private space in the garden. In the span of four or five years, its dense vegetation will reach a height of 4m (13.1ft), without spreading uncontrollably. Resistant to cold, comfortable in any good garden soil, preferably neutral to acidic, this variety adapts to many regions. It does not require the installation of a rhizome barrier.
Â
The Fargesia murielae is a plant in the poaceae family, a type of grass with woody stems that develops from a non-invasive rhizomatous stump, known as a clumping bamboo. In this type of bamboo, the very short inter-nodal rhizomes develop slowly at the periphery of the stump, which gradually expands, but they also develop towards the inside of the clump, which remains very dense without thinning in the centre. This umbrella bamboo, also known as Sinarundinaria murielae, is native to the mountains of central China and is one of the hardiest bamboos. It has survived in Eastern European countries with very harsh winters.
The 'Dino' cultivar, recently selected in Denmark, is one of the tallest in the murielae species. It has rapid and vigorous growth, forming a compact clump at the base, tapering upwards, reaching a height of 4 to 5m (16.4ft). Eventually, the plant will spread out over 2m (6.6ft) on the ground. The canes are upright, slender, 1cm (0.4in) in diameter but sturdy, green and covered in bloom when young. Over time, they take on a more beige colour. The foliage present on the canes is evergreen in winter and distributed almost throughout their height. The abundant leaves are larger and broader than those of other varieties. They are lanceolate and taper to a point, with a light and vibrant green hue.
Â
The Fargesia murielae Dino, with its dense stems and foliage, persistent and fast growth, is perfect for creating a windbreak, a sound barrier, or a natural or trimmed hedge. It will also make a strong impression as a standalone clump, integrated into a shrub border, or in a large pot or container on the balcony or terrace. To enhance and animate its foliage in summer, it can be associated with a viticella-type clematis with red flowers (Madame Julia Correvon, Purpurea Plena Elegans, Avant Garde), whose small foliage will blend naturally into the bamboo's vegetation. Tall grasses, giant cannas, and large dahlias (Dahlia imperialis) will also be good companions for this robust bamboo.

Botanical data
The Fargesia murielae Dino prefers partial shade, although it can tolerate the sun, as long as it is not scorching. However, avoid excessively dry exposures as it is sensitive to intense sunlight and prolonged drought. Reserve a shaded spot for it, especially in the south. Plant this bamboo in rich soil that remains slightly moist, rather heavy and retains water well, if possible, without chalk. If necessary, replace the soil in your garden with good horticultural compost. Plant in spring or autumn. To create a hedge, plant one every metre (3.2ft). The mature plant requires approximately 20 litres of water per week during hot periods and 10 litres for the rest of the year. In a pot, monitor watering, especially when the foliage is abundant, and apply two handfuls of lawn fertilizer to the base of your non-invasive bamboo from early March to mid-April. This will result in greener foliage. This bamboo tolerates pruning very well. Slugs can devour young shoots. Like all other Fargesia species, this non-invasive bamboo does not require the installation of a rhizome barrier at planting. It retains its green foliage throughout winter and loses some leaves throughout the year, more so in late autumn. The young spring shoots are bare, and their young leaves unfold in early summer.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
