More information

A small Bosnian pine tree that doesn't exceed 2m (7ft) in height after a few decades and 75cm (30in) in 10 years. This small conifer has a dense conical shape with upright dark green foliage. It bears 5cm (2in) cones that turn brown when ripe. It is very hardy, not demanding in terms of soil type, easy to cultivate in the sun, and tolerant of both dry and non-stagnant humidity. Perfect for structuring small spaces, from rock gardens to terraces or balconies if planted in a container, not to mention the ornamental and graphic contribution of its small silhouette in a flowerbed.

Description

Pinus heldreichii 'Little Dracula' is a small-sized Bosnian pine with a dense, conical and open habit, whose long dark green needles are erect and the new shoots are reddish in colour. Its evergreen foliage and graphical appearance are decorative all year round. Easy to grow and very hardy, it adapts to a wide range of soils and climates, tolerating drought once established and only fearing waterlogged soils. It tolerates maritime winds and intense sun on a terrace quite well. It can be planted in borders, rockeries or containers.

Pinus heldreichii (synonym Pinus leucodermis) is an evergreen plant of the Pinaceae family, native to the mountains of southeastern Europe, southwestern Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia, northern Greece and southern Italy. It grows between 900 and 2,500 metres (2953 and 8000 feet) in altitude, reaching a height of 25 to 35 metres (82 to 115 feet) and forming a trunk with a diameter of 2 metres (7 feet) in its natural habitat. Champion of longevity, this conifer with a well-groomed conical habit can live for over 1000 years.

The 'Little Dracula' variety is clearly distinguished from the wild species by its reduced size and much denser vegetation. Its growth is slow, reaching its maturity age of 1.5 to 2 metres (5 to 7 feet) in height and 1 to 1.50 metres (3 to 5 feet) in width after 20 years. At 10 years old, it measures about 70 to 80cm (28 to 32in) in height. It grows with a conical habit, which can be accentuated by a light annual pruning with secateurs. The Bosnian pine belongs to the group of pines with 2 needles, which are grouped in pairs on the branches. They are dark green in colour, rather long, and especially stiff and pointed. It is therefore best to avoid planting this conifer near a pathway! Very dense, surrounding the branches, they form aesthetic brushes. The brown bark is decorative, although patience is required to fully enjoy it due to the slow growth of this miniature variety. Hardy to at least -20°C (1°F), it grows in most soils, from neutral to slightly acidic and even slightly calcareous, with the only requirement being good drainage. It thrives in full sun but will tolerate partial shade in a hot climate.

The Bosnian Pine 'Little Dracula' can be planted in any garden, even small ones, and brings a lot of satisfaction over time. Planted in a container, this conifer is ideal for easily decorating a balcony or terrace for many years. In the garden, it can be planted in rockeries or borders, combined with other conifers or shrubs. Its dark green foliage enhances light-coloured flowers or foliage. The numerous varieties of Potentilla fruticosa, which are just as easy to grow as it is, brighten up its dark green mass with their cheerful flowering. In slightly moist soil, Cercis canadensis 'Merlot', a Canadian Redbud with heart-shaped purple leaves and pink flowers appearing on the still bare branches, forms a superb contrast with our Pine. With its slow growth, it can be planted alongside without causing any inconvenience. And for those who love strong contrasts, nothing beats a Berberis thunbergii 'Golden Carpet', a spreading ground cover form with bright yellow foliage that is no more demanding than 'Little Dracula'.

Planting and care

Pinus heldreichii 'Little Dracula' can be planted from September to November and from February to April in ordinary, rather fertile, well-drained soil. It is not picky about the type of soil, as long as it is not waterlogged. Choose a very sunny location, or possibly partially shaded in hot climates. Soak the root balls in a bucket of water before planting. Add organic compost during planting and water generously in the first few years, and during prolonged dry spells. In poor soil, apply a special conifer fertilizer every year in April, and cultivate the soil in summer. This hardy conifer (down to at least -20°C (1°F)) is not afraid of wind and tolerates drought once established. To maintain or enhance the habit of this bush, an annual light pruning can be done between May and June, by shortening the young shoots. Pruning of branches and twigs, on the other hand, should be done from September to November.
