Description

The Hydrangea macrophylla Pink Pop is part of a new hydrangea developed in Denmark named Music Collection. It forms a compact shrub with an exceptionally long flowering periodproviding large flowers in vibrant tones. In the 'Pink Pop' variety, the tightly packed florets on beautiful heads display different shades of pink and end in a very dark pink. This beautiful dense bush with a rounded habit is covered in flowers all summer for 3 months. It displays a forest green leaf that forms a beautiful setting for flowering. This hardy, easy and floriferous variety has its place in all types of gardens in fresh, non-limestone soil. It can be used in beds, on its own, or even in pots.

The Hydrangea macrophylla 'Pink Pop' is one of many hybrids obtained by cross-breeding the species H. macrophylla and H. aspera, among others. All these hardy plants belong to the Hydrangeaceae family and originate from China and Japan. This bush is barely taller than it is wide, reaching 1.50 m (4 ft 11 in) in height for approximately 1.40 m (4 ft 7 in) in widthFrom July to September, it produces many large, dense and almost round inflorescences17 to 20 cm (6.7 to 7.9 in) in diameter, composed of many decorative fertile flowers and very rare insignificant fertile florets. The flowers, which form on one-year-old wood, are spread over dark green, deciduous leaves which fall in autumn. The leaves are opposite; they reach a minimum of ten centimetres in length. They are single, ovate to elliptical, and saw-toothed, ending in a sharp point. Hydrangeas can live for at least 50 years.

The Pink Pop Hydrangea adds dynamism and a beautiful touch of happiness to the semi-shaded areas of the garden and terrace. The hydrangeas are well known for brightening up the north side of houses. This one will be happy in an east-facing position, in the morning sun or north, in beds and hedges. This variety is adapted to cultivation in open ground and large containers, which can be placed on the terrace or near the entrance. Even though hydrangeas are not fond of limestone, they are not, strictly speaking, ericaceous plants. Combine them with magellanica fuchsias, with lilies, or plant spring flowering bulbs in front of their round silhouette. Enjoy their sumptuous and long-lasting flowering in the garden or the house.

Planting and care

To plant the hydrangea macrophylla 'Pink Pop', choose a slightly shaded spot in spring or early autumn, such as against an east-facing or northern wall. Keep it away from cold winds and the sun. It prefers deep, fresh, well-drained, and relatively fertile soil, but ericaceous soil is unnecessary. You can enrich the soil with a good base fertiliser before planting. If the soil is dry at the foot of the wall, plant the root ball at least 30-40 cm (11.8-15.7 in) away from the base and add well-rotted compost to improve soil freshness. This plant is resilient and can be planted in cold areas. When pruning, remove the faded flowers on the first or second bud. To encourage the formation of young shoots, cut back a quarter or a third of the oldest stems to the base when the plant matures. Prune every year in March or April.
