The tree was planted according to the recommendations, the main stem died after 3 months despite all precautions taken. A shoot appeared at the end of spring, we thought it would grow in place of the main one, unfortunately in November it fell and it seems to us that the tree is dead.

Description

The Paulownia tomentosa is a fast-growing tree whose leaves provide a beautiful and dense shade. It is an elegant and large-sized tree, perfect for a spacious garden.

The flowering occurs in spring, in April-May, when magnificent elongated and mauve bell-shaped flowers bloom on the still bare branches in clusters. Then come the opulent leaves of 15-25cm (6-10in) in diameter, apple green in color, they seem to capture the rays of light and illuminate the garden from the early hours of the day.

In autumn, once the leaves have fallen, the dry fruits remain on the tree. The split shells resemble little birds with wide open beaks. They are very decorative and perfect for adding an original touch to your winter compositions.

The Paulownia tomentosa is a tall tree that can easily reach 12m (39ft) in height. Its branches are usually hollow. However, by pruning it into a coppice, it is possible to maintain a low height like a bush. The leaves will then grow to impressive proportions, easily reaching 30 to 50cm (12 to 20in) in diameter, but you will not get any flowering.

Plant your Paulownia tomentosa in a location with sunlight, possibly some light shade. Be careful not to plant it in a windy area, as its wood is brittle. It appreciates any type of soil as long as it is deep and well-drained.

Planting and care

Plant your Paulownia tomentosa in a sunny location, possibly with some light shade. Be careful not to plant it in a windy area as its wood is brittle. It appreciates any type of soil as long as it is deep and you provide good drainage; suffocating soils can cause the attack of wood-rotting fungi (such as Armillaria, a parasite that feeds on tree wood). After planting, water generously to remove any air pockets. In case of drought, water for a few weeks to promote root development. To enjoy its shade in summer, remove the lower branches when your tree is still young. Without this step, it will be difficult to walk underneath. Apart from that, simply remove diseased branches and dead wood, and you can also thin out the center of the tree by pruning branches that intersect. Be careful not to prune too large branches as this operation will make your tree susceptible to fungi and weaken it irreversibly; it is best to stick to diameters smaller than 3cm (1in). For coppicing, cut your tree to ground level every year at the end of winter.
