Description

The 'Leen van der Mark' Triumph Tulip is a beautiful bicolour tulip, quite old, always appreciated for adding a lovely touch of colour to spring borders. Its large, wide-flaring flower is a vibrant red with a pale yellow border that becomes white. When planted in mass, this variety doesn't go unnoticed in the garden. Pair it with white and orange tulips or late-flowering daffodils, with purple foliage, and the effect is guaranteed! A reliable choice!

The 'Leen van der Mark' Triumph Tulip belongs to the Lily family. It is of horticultural origin and was introduced to the market in 1968. It is currently classified in the 'Triumph' group, which is characterized by narrow cup-shaped flowers. They are a result of cross-breeding between early single tulips and Darwin tulips. This variety 'Leen van der Mark' develops a sturdy flower stem of about 45cm (18in) in height. Its flower is rather large and distinctly bicolour. It blooms from late April to May, towards the end of the tulip season. The foliage emerges from the ground in spring. It consists of large lanceolate leaves with a glaucous green colour that turn yellow and dry a few weeks after flowering, when the bulb enters its dormant phase.

Triumph tulips are unmatched for bringing spring colour to pots or sunny gardens. When designing your borders, don't forget to consider the height and flowering period, as these parameters vary significantly from one cultivar to another. It is wise to plant a few more bulbs for cutting, as they make gorgeous long-lasting cut flowers. 'Leen van der Mark' finds its place in large borders, in combination with other white or yellow tulips, but also alongside blue flowers. Forget-me-nots, wood hyacinths, or grape hyacinths will enhance its warm tones. Also, plant this Triumph tulip at the base of a Japanese maple with purple foliage, the combination of colours and textures is perfect. Tulips are also beautiful flowers for cutting.

Planting and care

Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to December, at a depth of 15cm (6in), spacing them 10cm (4in) apart. The planting should be done in ordinary soil, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, loose, well-worked, and well-drained. Never add undecomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. Tulips will grow well in moist to dry soil in summer. Place them in a good exposure, sunny or partially shaded. Once flowering is finished, it is preferable to remove the fruits to avoid exhausting the plant.
