Description

Tulipa 'Elegant Crown' is a Triumph tulip with a curiously-shaped flower that does not go unnoticed in spring beds. It blooms in the middle of the tulip season, from April to May. It forms a large corolla, made up of petals that are curiously rolled up at the edge and somewhat tubular, giving it a crown-like appearance. The flowers are scarlet-red bordered with creamy-white. It will look beautiful in a bouquet with Madonna lilies, or in a small bed with blue forget-me-nots and its counterpart in immaculate white, T. 'White Liberstar'.

Tulipa 'Elegant Crown' belongs to the Liliaceae family. Of horticultural origin, it was registered in 2011. It is currently classified in the 'Triumph' group, whose main characteristic is to present narrow cup-shaped flowers. It will reach a height of 45cm (18in) when in bloom, with good resistance to rain and wind. The flowers appear at the top of tall stems, well above the widely lanceolate green-blue leaves. The large single flowers are somewhat square-shaped. They have a thick texture and are composed of large slightly undulate and recurved petals. The colour of the petals is bright red regularly bordered with very pale white to yellow. Flowering takes place from April 15th to May 15th, in the heart of the tulip season.

'Elegant Crown' works well in large well-drained beds, alongside foliage plants (grasses, fennel, lady's mantle). By mixing tulips, you can also create your own harmonies. Plant it with pastel-coloured tulips, pink tulips ('New Design'), white tulips ('Calgary'), or black tulips ('Black Jack'). You can also plant it with narcissus like 'Thalia' or 'Mount Hood'. It can be planted in borders, rockeries, flower beds, pots, and containers. It works well on balconies and patios. The flowers are ideal for creating elegant bouquets. Only use a little water in a vase. If your tulips open too quickly, you can add two to three ice cubes to the vase each day.

Planting and care

Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to December. Choose a sunny or partially shaded location. Plant in ordinary, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, loose, well-worked, and well-draining soil. Never add poorly decomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. Plant the bulbs at a depth of 15cm (6in), spacing them 10cm (4in) apart. The bulbs will grow well in moist to dry soil in summer. Once flowering is finished, it is wise to remove the fruits to avoid exhausting the plant.
