Description

The Tulip Triumph 'Calgary' is a small-sized variety that offers lovely single flowers, in a bright white colour touched with cream at the base, and pleasantly scented. Its low growth is particularly suitable for cultivation in pots and containers. In the garden, its short and sturdy stems are weather-resistant. It blooms early in the tulip season, along with grape hyacinths and daisies, creating charming scenes, for example, along borders or in large planters.

The 'Calgary' Tulip is a famous Dutch hybrid dating back to the 1990s, awarded by the Royal Horticultural Society in England for its remarkable qualities. It belongs to the Lily family. Originally developed horticulturally, it is currently classified in the 'Triumph' group, characterized by narrow cup-shaped flowers. Borne on sturdy stems averaging 25cm (10in) in height, 'the flowers of 'Calgary' emerge just above beautiful glaucous foliage, composed of broadly lanceolate leaves measuring 10 to 35cm (4 to 14in) long. They are simple corollas, 5 to 7cm (2 to 3in) in diameter, white and slightly fragrant, in the shape of a cup, with six "petals" (more precisely tepals), delicately washed with very pale yellow at the base. Flowering usually takes place in mid-April (sometimes early May depending on climatic conditions). The foliage yellows and disappears a few weeks after flowering, while the bulb goes into dormancy. It will regenerate in late winter.

This 'Calgary' tulip is ideal for border decoration or even for containers to be placed on your terrace or balcony. You can also cut the flowers to make beautiful and long-lasting bouquets. Plant your 'Calgary' Tulip bulbs in small groups among forget-me-nots, grape hyacinths, small lavenders, not far from roses or your favourite bushes. Don't forget to consider the height and flowering period of the tulips when designing your borders, as these parameters vary significantly from one variety to another. It is wise to plant a few more bulbs for cutting, for example, near the vegetable garden.

Planting and care

Place the Triumph 'Calgary' tulips in a sunny location preferably or partially shaded and sheltered from the wind. Plant them in mid-October to mid-November for optimal spring flowering. Plant the bulbs in well-drained and deeply loosened soil at a depth of 15cm (6in). Space the bulbs 10cm (4in) apart without touching them to create a mass effect; cut the flower stems after flowering. Allow the leaves to dry completely before cutting them.
