Description

The 'Maja' fringed tulip has very bright golden yellow flowers in May. The edge of the petals is fringed. Perfect for bouquets or in spring flower beds.

'Maja' fringed tulip belongs to the Liliaceae family. Of horticultural origin, it is currently classified in the 'fringed' group, whose main characteristic is to have finely toothed petal edges. This tulip will reach a height of 50 cm (20in) when in bloom in May, a little later than other tulips. The flowers are single with a slightly open cup shape, and measure up to 6 cm (2in) wide. The fringed edges of this tulip are also yellow. The flowers last a long time and allow the tulip season to be extended until May.

Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to December, at a depth of 15 cm (6in), 10 cm (4in) apart in ordinary, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly chalky, loose, well-worked and well-drained soil. Never add poorly decomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. 'Maja' will grow well in moist to dry soil, in a sunny or semi-shaded location. Once flowering is finished, it is best to remove the seed heads to avoid exhausting the plant.

In the world of flowers, nothing compares to fringed tulips to spice up your garden in spring with something unique. Ideal for borders, 'Maja' will also create beautiful spots in perennial flower beds with biennial plants that will fill the space after flowering. You can choose forget-me-nots or wallflowers for this. By choosing fringed tulips, you will add a unique touch to your bouquets.

About botanical species: Tulip species are found in most of the Old World, from Western Europe to China and Japan, through Eastern Europe, Asia Minor, and Central Asia. Their distribution area also includes North Africa and the Indian subcontinent. The centre of diversity of the genus is in the Pamir and Hindu Kush mountains and the steppes of Kazakhstan.

There are various wild species, many of which are endangered. These are either large tulips from crops, the most well-known being the Agen tulip (Tulipa agenensis), or small tulips found in wooded areas or among rocks in the mountains. In cultivation, these are called "botanical tulips", and one of the most common ones is the wild tulip (Tulipa sylvestris), which often used to grow in the shelter of vines and whose subspecies australis is known as the southern tulip.
