Tulipa crispa Lambada - Fringed Tulip

Tulipa 'Lambada' boasts a very bright, single flowering in May. Its beautiful delicately fringed flowers display dark orange petals, finely dentate with light orange. It is ideal in a flower bed, along the edge of a border, or in a bouquet.

Tulipa 'Lambada' belongs to the Liliaceae family. Of horticultural origin, it is currently classified in the 'Crispa' group, whose main characteristic is the finely dentate tips of the petals. This tulip will reach a height of 40cm (16in) when in bloom. Flowering takes place in May, a little later than other tulips. The flowers are simple, with a slightly open cup shape, in shades of dark to light orange. The fringed edges of this magnificent tulip are almost yellow. The flowers last a long time and extend the tulip season.

There are few plants to rival dentate tulips. They are unique and elegant. Ideal for borders, the 'Lambada' tulip will create beautiful spots in perennial beds, alongside biennial plants that will fill the space after flowering. You can choose forget-me-nots or wallflowers for this purpose. Dentate tulips bring a unique touch to bouquets.

Tulip species are found throughout most of the Old World, from Western Europe to China and Japan, including Eastern Europe, Asia Minor, and Central Asia. Their distribution range also includes North Africa and the Indian subcontinent. The centre of diversity for the genus is in the Pamir and Hindu Kush mountains and the steppes of Kazakhstan.

There are various wild species, many of which are endangered. These include large adventive tulips from cultivated fields, the most well-known being the Agen tulip (Tulipa agenensis), as well as small tulips found in wooded areas or among rocks in the mountains. In cultivation, they are called "botanical tulips", and one of the most common is the wild tulip (T. sylvestris), which used to often grow sheltered by vines and whose subspecies, australis, is known as the southern tulip.
