Description

The Fringed Double Tulip 'Crispion Sweet' is a variety that is both voluptuous and delicately crafted. Absolutely enchanting, its very double flowers bordered and randomly streaked with creamy white display a magnificent gradient of pink tones, ending in an intense pink. It usually blooms in April on short, sturdy stems. When cut, its flowers will form wonderful bouquets.

The Dentate Tulip 'Crispion Sweet' belongs to the Lily family. Originating from horticulture and obtained in 2004, it is currently classified in the 'Crispa' group, whose main characteristic is the finely dentate tips of the petals. This tulip will reach about 30cm (12in) in height when in bloom. The flowering takes place in April, sometimes a bit later depending on the climate. The flowers are fully double, with a round and full cup shape, and can measure up to 8-10cm (3-4in) wide when fully open. At blooming, the petals are widely bordered and streaked with white, giving way to a delightful range of pink tones. The fringed edges of this tulip are intensely coloured in the same way. The flowers last a long time in the garden as well as in vases, allowing the tulip season to extend until May.

Dentate tulips are appreciated for their strong stems, which give them good stability even in hot weather. The double Dentate Tulip 'Crispion Sweet' is planted in groups or mixed with other varieties in large flowerbeds. Combine it with other tulips, earlier ones, in white, mauve, or dark pink, to maximize the flowering period of the flowerbeds. It can also be used as a border, in rockeries, as well as in pots and planters. This tulip enhances balconies and terraces very well. It pairs perfectly with tall perennials such as early German iris, bushes like dwarf rhododendrons, and biennials such as forget-me-nots. Its flowers are highlighted by small ground cover plants: lungworts, wall bellflowers, Aubrietas, and silver baskets will serve as a backdrop and hide yellowed leaves in summer.

Planting and care

Place the double 'Crispion Sweet' dentate tulip in a sunny spot from October to December for a beautiful spring flowering. You can also place it in a partially shaded location. Plant the bulbs as soon as possible in a light, fertile, well-drained and well-loosened soil, at a depth of 15cm (6in) (bulbs should be covered with twice their height of soil). Space the bulbs 10cm (4in) apart, making sure they do not touch each other for a mass effect. Cut the flower stalks after flowering. Allow the leaves to completely dry before cutting them.
