Description

The 'Masterclass' Decorative Dahlia is a delicate cultivar, producing small pastel flowers, perfect for adding a touch of softness to the garden and bouquets. Its ivory petals with a hint of lavender create a subtle harmony in flower beds or vases. With abundant and prolonged flowering from July to the first frosts, it allows for beautiful combinations in romantic compositions.

Dahlias are tuberous plants belonging to the large Asteraceae family, with wild species originating from the high plateaus of Mexico. In horticulture, dahlias are classified based on the shape of their flowers. 'Masterclass' belongs to the category of Decorative Dahlias, specifically small-flowered decorative dahlias. In this group, the flower heads do not exceed 14 cm in diameter, with their colourful ligules arranged regularly in a spiral, either bent towards the stem or fringed. In the case of this 'Masterclass' variety, the flower heads measure 13-14 cm in diameter. The ivory ligules, touched with subtle lavender at the tips, evolve over time to become very pale. The plant has an upright habit, with dense dark green foliage composed of slightly toothed lobed leaves. Its flowering period extends from July to October-November.

To enjoy a long flowering period, remember to deadhead the flowers and make bouquets. The 'Masterclass' Dahlia is ideal for planting in perennial and low bush borders, bringing lightness with its soft hues. It can also be used in pots to adorn a terrace or balcony. Its colour blends easily with many other colours, especially purples, whites, and pink tones. Try pairing it with Globe Thistles like 'Veitch's Blue', 'Peachy' Linaria, and the small white roses of the 'Schneeküsschen' Miniature Rose.

Dahlias, essential in cottage gardens and stunning in flower beds, also find their place in vegetable gardens to add a colourful touch. Originating from Mexico, the dahlia is a tuberous plant initially cultivated for its edible roots, but its disappointing taste quickly relegated it to the role of an ornamental plant. Since then, its generosity and the whimsy it displays continue to charm gardeners around the world.

Planting and care

The Dahlia 'Masterclass' is easy to grow in all regions. For a generous flowering, it is good to follow a few simple rules, plant the tubers in a sunny location from the last frosts, rich, fresh, and well-drained soils are perfect. However, stagnant moisture would promote tuber rot. Do not hesitate to amend the soil with compost and sand if necessary. Work the soil deeply and enrich it, for example, with crushed horn or dehydrated blood. Place your tuber and crumble the soil well to fill without air pockets. Your dahlia should be covered with about 6 cm of soil. At the end of planting, water heavily once and then renew this watering regularly during the first 6 weeks to help with rooting.

Dahlias are sensitive to cold, they need to be overwintered. In November, the first frosts blacken the foliage, it is time to dig them up. Carefully unearth the tubers. Remove as much soil as possible. Let the foliage dry so that the tubers can rebuild their reserves. Then cut the stems to 10 cm. Spread your bulbs in a crate on newspaper. Store them away from frost in a dry, cool, and dark place, such as a frost-free garage or attic, for example. In southern regions, close to the coast, experiencing few days of frost per year, it is possible to leave them in place. In this case, simply cover the ground with a layer of leaves or straw for protection.

However, this Dahlia is still sensitive to strong winds or heavy rains. To overcome this drawback, you can stake it, but let's agree, it's not very aesthetic. On the other hand, by pinching the stems early or removing the axial flower buds, you will spread out the plant's habit, providing more resistance to bad weather. At the same time, you channel the flow of sap onto a single flower that will become larger and stronger.
