Description

Canna 'Erebus' is an aquatic perennial plant that offers numerous pink-orange flowers throughout the summer until the first frost. Its large lance-shaped leaves are glaucous green and slightly pruinose. This exotic-looking clump can reach a height of 1.5m, or even 2m. This water Canna thrives in sunny, moist to very wet soil, even with its feet in the water, up to 20cm deep. It will make a statement at the edge of a water feature: pond, basin... Not very hardy, it is best to dig up the rootstock and store it in a dry place during winter.

From the Cannaceae family, Canna glauca is an aquatic species native to wet areas of tropical America, extending to the southern United States. It has since naturalized in Asia. The 'Erebus' variety grows from rhizomes that can be planted in moist soil or submerged in water, up to 20cm deep. Its large leaves are elongated and pointed, with a bluish-green and pruinose colour. The clump can reach a height of 1.5 to 2m, with a width of 60cm. Its leaves disappear in winter. From June-July until October, clusters of apricot-pink flowers appear. They attract pollinating insects.

This water Canna can be incorporated into a sunny exotic flowerbed with moist to very wet soil. It can also adorn the banks of a pond or basin. Create a Jungle atmosphere by pairing it with plants with large leaves such as Thalia dealbata or Colocasia 'Painted Black Gecko' with purple, almost black foliage. To add a touch of brightness, add some Iris ensata 'Diamant' with white flowers.

Planting and care

The 'Erebus' Canna is an aquatic perennial plant that thrives in moist to very moist soils, preferably rich and neutral. It can be planted with its feet in the water, up to a maximum of 20cm deep. Choose a sunny exposure. It is sensitive to frost, especially when not submerged, so it is best to dig up the rootstock before the first frost and store it indoors in a cool, dry place. Replant it in the following spring, once all risk of frost has passed. Beware of slugs and snails, as they are fond of its young leaves. Remove faded flowers as they appear to prolong the flowering period.
